The section that has been closed for about two years is open in theory, I don't drive it so I have no idea. There has been problems that have resulted in I-75 north bound being closed off and on above 8 mile road due to a cascading number of pot holes and canyons. Here is the link for the roads in Michigan after it opens just click on the cone icon.

That will only be a problem for people coming from the north.

Who from MEM is going, and do we have table(s) reserved?  I am planning to bring 3 fairly large pieces:
- Joy Engine
- Muncaster Grasshopper
- Colibri Hummingbird

and Coventry if I have room.

Kirk,
I missed this when it was first posted, was surprised nobody posted about it so I looked for it. I am planning to be there and could use most of a table. We are getting into town Thursday and leaving on Monday.

Set up starts this week for the show, see you this week end. Anybody coming check the MDOT web site for construction info as they are closing assorted sections over the weekends on I-94 and reduced lanes on I-765 both directions.

I will be there, as will 4 of my friends from the New England Model Engineering Society. As I seem to do every year I will again do my Seminar, "Adventures in Home Shop CNC" This year I will be talking about some interesting experiments with a very simple touch probe. I think I was told the seminar is on Saturday Morning. I think I am going to bring my traction engine this year, haven't done that for several years. The damn crate seems to get heavier every time I try to move it.

Ron, PT, I will be unable to make the show this year, but I would be interested in your talk about CNC topics in probing. Perhaps the talk could be video recorded and DVD distributed by the club for a donation to the club. Just a thought.

Maury, hope al is well with you and other commitments is the reason you will miss this year. I thgink that would be strictly up to Ron about his lecture, last time NAMES tried to do something with a DVD type of deal it was a bust and more work and time than it brought in.

It would be way to much hassle to video record a talk, and the resulting video wold be dull and useless.

When I get back I will post some info here on what Ive done with probing. I think its going to work very well.

I have seen this show appear each year with a conversation about attending. I have always wanted to go to the N.A.M.E.S Expo, and thoroughly enjoyed the photos kindly taken and posted on our site. It must be some experience to show your own work and be inspired by the work of others.

This year the possiblilty is out of the question. I have been battling with Cancer now for over a year. Chemo has been oral and that allows me to continue in the shop since my brain tumor is not
debilitating so far.

I'll be eager to see photos of the show again this year.

Enjoy!

Cheers...John

Well the show floor was filling up with exhibitors and vendors. If you are coming in on either Saturday or Sunday make sure you check the MDOT map of construction projects before leaving home Use the cone icon upper left corner on the map page as there is some week end only work and closures

Some of the highlights for me were the not so little demon V8. All dimensions were doubled. It is a monster and ran extremely well.

Smallest V8 spark ignition engine in the world. I do not know of another one with a smaller displacement.

Steve,
It was good to see you and the other folks from the forum. I must admit I have never talked to so many people interested in this hobby wanting resources for plans, I did my best to direct them to resources I was familiar with. There was also a guy who had a little 2 wheeled cart with his own work, an air powered V8 and a V twin steam engine that was about 1/3 to 1/2 done. I was sort of blunt with him. "You are on the wrong side of this table." 🙂 He had this misconceived notion that he needed a bunch more engines to display. I said next year you come in the building go to the desk under the big clock and register and set up on this side of the table. I hope I see him next year! I took a lot of photos on Friday & a few more Sunday I haven't fired up the laptop since I left home and we are taking a liesurely drive home on Monday, I don't expect the opportunity to share any photos till mid week.

I enjoyed sharing a table with Art this week.  The Joy engine and Coventry ran all day, but had issues with both the Grasshopper and Hummingbird that will need to be rectified back home.

I picked up the castings for the Green cutoff engine.  I'm going to the Henry Ford museum today to get pics of the example they have on display.

Smallest V8 spark ignition engine in the world. I do not know of another one with a smaller displacement.

Since the builder's name isn't on the spec sheet, I'll add it to Steve'so post.  Chris Dinardo designed this little V8 from a clean sheet, then built a very nice engine detailed to the point that the valve train is lubed via oil flowing thru the tiny pushrods.

I am not so sure about the claim to be the smallest- Eric Whittle brought a V8 air cooled engine several years ago and that was pretty small. It was written up in the UK magazine, but I cant put my hands on it right now to see its displacement.

Regardless of claims of smallest it is still a fine piece of work.

I just looked back through this topic and see that the fellow I had a nice chat with was Art K, of Madison WI. We were back to back on our tables and until now I did not realize it was someone on this forum. We need hats, or big buttons next year to identify us a forum readers.

Yes, eight of them. That's a mighty big, 16 amp, draw for a 2 volt battery. You didn't get much time for starting even from a fully charged battery

Mike

BTW the Whittle V8 displaced 10.6 cc, that's 0.65 cubic inches but was not spark ignition.

I am not so sure about the claim to be the smallest

If you see a smaller engine that is fired with spark plugs through a distributor, let me know I would love to see some pictures of it. If a smaller one exists, the pictures are not on the interweb.
