Vise Handle Question
« on: January 27, 2019, 02:01:31 PM »
Does anyone have any experience with one of these alternate vise handle from Edge Technology. Thinking of one of there rather that a spider or speed type handle. I have been pleased with the other Edge items I have but any input or experience with one of these would be appreciated.

They seem to make good stuff Dave. I like that it has a magnet on the back too, easy storage, just stick it on the mill table when not on the vise. Price seems reasonable too.

Looks good     ill probably order one.    The stock swivel handle is slow! And i keep bashing the Y axis handle with it.

I agree, though I will keep it for those times more torque may be needed. But with a 6" vise and model size parts, this should be enough. Hoping to hear from someone that has had on a while to see how the hex hole wears being aluminum.

Agreed, though my 4 inch vise VERY rarely gets reefed down...im more worried about cfushing the part!

We have this type of handle (different manufacturer-same design) on all our vises in the school shop.
They work well-if you need a little more tightness, just tap it with a dead blow hammer.
It also keeps the vise handle from catching on the Y ways and jamming the machine when moving in X.

My handle doesnt hit while moving the table.  It hits as i swing the vice wrench.    Its just so oversized.

I've found that sliding T handle socket wrenches with appropriate socket work well in my shop for vise handles.  Half inch drive works well on my 6 inch Kurt and 3/8 drive seems right on my 4 inch vise.  With the handle in mid position, it is easy to spin and does not interfere with the ways.

The Edge Technology wrenches do look nice.

Hmmmmm....you can always print an insert, would only be 3/32 per side but doable.

That was my original plan but want to try one of these. If it doesn't work out this will be the backup.

Hi,

If it has a magnet in the handle, that's going to be a pain. Slivers and chips stuck on the handle that you are going to hold, not so good ? IMO  :)

This is what I made for my Kurt vise. I have a large pile of junk and a lot of time on my hands, plus $20.00 is just to expensive for me.

Bill, I have their earlier version and love it. I also have a Kurt speed handle like Steamer showed and that one I rarely use. +1 on it not getting hung on anything when moving the table.

Rev., I had a speed handle too but had worn to the point of being a sloppy fit, bent handles, etc.   I bought a lot of them for the university machine shop too over the years for import Kurt
clone vises and there is nothing wrong with them, was just interested to see if this might be a better mousetrap. I am sure the Kurt speed handle is a nice one but last I looked they were very proud of it at $157  :o

Yup, but I bought mine through the company 🙈😎  The one from Edge( almost what you showed)  is sweet. Their first edition didn’t have the set screw/ locking feature on the “fast end” . Mine stays on the vice now “permanently”. If’n I really need to choke the living shite outta something, I go to the “slow end” and give it a whack wit da dead blow.

The one in the link is from edge Cletus. It's just black instead or their anodized red for some reason.

I was under the impression that leaving the handle on the vise was a no-no.  I hit the handle by mistake more than once and lost a set-up before I finally got in the habit of taking it off.  For faster adjustment, I angle the swivel handle out and crank the knob in smaller circles.  My gripe is that the hex is too sloppy so it takes two hands to keep it from falling off.  I need to work out some kind of detent.

Great video. I ended up watching the whole thing rather than just skipping ahead to the vise handle. But indeed, the same concept. Thanks for posting this!

The handle arrived today via priority mail. A bit more compact that I expected but that is a good thing. I was thinking it was aluminum, but no, looks to be cast but not sure of the material...zinc alloy perhaps. The fit on the vise's hex is good and even at the extended position, moving the vise in and out is pretty rapid, so it will likely stay in that position. The magnet is barely strong enough to hold it vertically on  the mill table...good idea just not a good execution of the idea. The magnet is removable though and will probably do that to keep it from attracting ferrous swarf. All in all, I am happy with it so far , just need to give it a try now actually milling something.

Bill

Edit: I went back and looked at the description and it does say aluminum. Sure does feel heavier than that though, but I will defer to the OEM description.

You’ll love it. The inner hex is nice what for them delicate parts you don’t want to really Gronk down on.

Bill, I have the same handle you’ve shown only mine is red and doesn’t have the locking screw. I guess I should have said that the other hex what for rapid moves is what is nice for the delicate parts

Yeah, I agree Cletus, though for now mine is in the outer hex, the vise can still be moved fast enough but after using it a while I will decide. It's easy enough to move in any case.
