Happy new shop addition!
« on: January 26, 2019, 03:14:54 AM »
For years I, like most of us, have wanted a heat treat furnace or similar but the cost was prohibitive. :o

Look what just landed..... for $100! Made in the early '90s and only fired once and rated for cone 10 (2350*F) all day long.

So not just for heat treating... can you say foundry??  I've wanted to be able to cast aluminum and brass/bronze for various things and now I can! I have a big carbon crucible and the kiln came with a bunch of interior 'furniture'; ceramic plates and spacers to allow stacking pottery.

Can't wait to fire it up! :whoohoo:

Hi Pete, that looks like a great find.  And at the price it won’t have to do much to be worthwhile.

I wonder if it is hot enough to set up fabrications with flux and silver solder for furnace soldering.

Congratulations

Oh yes, that is very high on the list. I will spend some time thinking about how to establish an inert atmosphere. Sealing the kiln won't be too hard. That would be the gold standard!! :naughty:

Hi Pete, Some of the impellers on centrifugal compressors are gold-nickel brazed, a bit higher temperature and strength than silver soldering, but obviously a sopimilar process.  The covers were machined to shape, centre punch pop marks made to establish the spacing, and thin foils of the gold-nickel alloy carefully placed.  Then the whole lot was heated in a controlled atmosphere for a very sound impeller.  Certainly the way to go if you have the suitable furnace.

That's a great find, Pete!
I've wanted an oven too, but like you find them too expensive.  I'd never thought about a kiln.  I'm betting I could find one of those 2nd hand. Though the one you found looks great and at an amazing price!

Good luck.  Definitely keep us posted on how it goes.

Great find Pete.

To create an inert atmosphere I have heard it suggested (old book) to burn a bit of wood inside after closing the door/lid.

I built my own small furnace to heat treat shop made cutters but also to cast some ZA12 in the near future.
