 Its one of the smaller sets of castings.

It is showing signs of premature fondling on the top corner. So it won't be long until it is opened.

Its about the same size as Surus's latest acquisition of a Twin Oscillator :noidea:

Hi Whiskey, probably someone sending you something in an old box they had lying around to save paying money for a new one!

Presumably not the 3-cylinder compound I promised him as that box is still in my shop. Something easier to practice on?

It's a box with a label on it.
And I question even that.

Uh oh, Zee took a Philosophy class!

Old joke about that - final exam day in the Philosophy 101 class. Teacher puts a chair up on the desk, and tells the students to write an essay proving the chair exists. 10 seconds later, one student stands up, hands in his essay, and walks out. Teacher looks at the paper, it just says: "What chair?"

Ol Tug

I reckon Tug has thrown in a bit of a clue - 'Sunny' would suggest to me a Star/ Sun / Sirius engine?

You could be onto something there, maybe one of their pre machined kits, can't go wrong with one of those well at least I hope not :LittleDevil:

Hope it's not one of those common No1s

Thanks for all the guesses guys. I’m sorry to have posted and then went missing, but, moments after I posted this, Lou came and told me that her brother had just passed away unexpectedly. We have had to leave home and try and get this mess settled. He had lived his life alone, died alone, and has now left us with the mess of finalizing his estate and affairs with zilch clues to go on. Folks, get your affairs in order as if you were assuming room temperature tomorrow: don’t do this to your loved ones. Rant kinda over. Ok, Gas- Mantle pretty much hit it on the head: it is the Sirius( thanks Tug 8) I know it’s uglier than homade sin, but, I guess the reason why I bought it was because, so I’ve read, it was actually used back in the big WWII to power radio equipment. Now when people say: “ yeah, but what does it do?” , I’ll have a hysterical, er, historical reply. I’ll be checking in from the mess and the mountains of Virginia so y’all keep me up to date.

Hi Whiskey - I thought it was the 'Sun' hence the remark - looks like I was one down the list ::)

Guess you got some 'sirius' modelling ahead of you then when matters allow :-\

Always fancied doing the Sun but unlikely now - looking forwards to your pics and progress in due course though.

Hang on in there buddy - Ol Tug

That is so cool!

There are some more details at https://www.stationroadsteam.com/stuart-sirius-generator-set-stock-code-1632/

Designed to be parachuted in along with its boiler, and used to recharge radio set batteries. Suppose that would be for clandestine users in relatively fixed bases, not airborne troops? ("Sorry Captain, radio's down until we find some more coal to fire the radio boiler"). Though my first thought was for small ships with steam boilers...not as likely by the '40s I'd suppose.

It does remind me of this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzAjO5_SyTU

Looking forward to the build, Mr. Whiskey. And sorry to hear about your BIL. Rant heard and understood (my uncle-in-law left a similar messy estate for my wife and MIL to sort out). We have an estate planning meeting scheduled sometime next month to start getting things sorted, motivated by my wife's experience.

Hope the rest of the year gets rosier for you both.

Jack Hampshire had an engine like this driving the lighting dynamo on his Foden steam wagon. I also remember another 'clandestine' generating set with, I think, a single cylinder engine and a boiler like an air cooled motorbike engine cylinder. We got this to work with wood firing.
Best regards

Roger
