The first 6 models are available as fully machined kits from Chiltern Models so if you don't have a workshop of your own there is no reason not to make your own steam engines  8)

Agreed. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us Jo. Ive seen a few in that collection that I would like to have. What is that model towards the last of them. It appears to be a three cylinder affair. ?

Thanks Guys, I will have to find out the details on that three cylinder engine or maybe one of the visitors today would like to find out... it is on the SMEE stand  ;)

You only ended up with one set of castings?  :o. Surus must have been disappointed  ;)

We did look at the rotative pump from Southworth but Blackgates did not currently have any in stock. We would probably go directly to Bob at Southworth Engines for that anyway. Polly never bring casting sets unless you ask them specifically for it  :-\

Interesting but still not obvious  :headscratch: The disc and spring connected to the throttle could be a clutch to disconnect the load at idle. The mechanism behind the engine could be a pull cord starter or some form of winch. I think that there are some parts missing

Well "engines" both steam and IC seemed to be a bit thin on the ground this year if you exclude those on the dealers stands which Jo has covered extensively which meant nothing really new or exciting. I did manage to find a few dotted around the club stands and have also taken a few of the non" engine" subjects too. In no particular order.

A quick update on my missing set of castings  :(

I have been in contact with Bob Potter and he tells me that as of last October he passed on the Southworth range to Blackgates.  Bob was good enough to send us a set of drawings so we can plan our next casting purchase  ::)

Well, yes, I was looking at that croc - thought it was just a decorative head. Is it an operating sub? Very cool! We are supposed to have one of our RC sub meets tomorrow over near Bufallo NY, but it all depends on the weather, it is snowing a lot today, supposed to be another foot or so and high winds tomorrow, so it all depends on if the weather-guesser is correct for once.

One thing I notice in a lot of the pictures from this and other UK shows is the much greater emphasis on security with the alarmed systems and such. Is this based on problems in the past or just a precautionary measure. That just doesn't seem very common at all on this side of the pond unless things have changed in the last year or two since I have attended one. Just curious is why I am asking.

Models have walked in the past

The other thing is our shows tend to just be a display on a stand that may or may not be attended by anyone, your shows are very much a table with the owner on one side and the viewer on the other so there is always going to be someone there to keep an eye on things.

Thanks Jason, that does make sense and I agree, over here the owners are usually very close to their models, like across the table as you say.

One thing I have noticed about the US exhibitions is they seem to have far more models running than we do in the UK, it seems like they have a centralised air supply where as here we rely on exhibitors providing their own supply.

The couple I have been to here in the US had a big commercial air compressor in the back somewhere, with pipes run down the backs of the tables and shutoff valve/taps on each table. Works very well, though it must be a big initial cost for all the piping/fittings and a bunch of work to set up by the show runners. Each exhibitor just had to bring a pressure valve/manifold/tubing to hook up their models. It does make for a great show though, stuff ticking away in every direction. The IC engines just ran off their own fuel, naturally.

My thanks to Jo and Jason for the photos - sort of makes up for me not being able to attend this year, well, nearly but not quite!  All much appreciated.

I don't know if it just clever photo composition or what, but the feeling I get is that there were not that many there at the show.  Normally when I go, I can't get to the front of the stand without a lot of pushing because of all the grey-haired old fellas like me who are blocking the pitch with their rucksacks on their backs, not actually buying anying or querying any item on display but just talking amongst themselves.  In these photos, apart from the old chap with a tattoo there seemed the crowd was definitely thin on the ground.

Re security, I can quite see the need to have the model wired together, having once run a stall at a junior school fate where stuff marked at just £0.50 each got nicked right under our nose.  Never underestimate the pleb who thinks their entitlement to something is greater than yours, the owner of said item.

You are right Chris, visitors were light on the ground on Friday. This seems to be the way shows are going... less visitors means the traders question going. Two major tool companies had smaller stalls this year and the last remaining large stand is talking about this being the last year they attend.

This was my last year at Alley Pally: I find it an awful place to get to, there are so few model engineering traders any more and I came home having failed to be able to buy the bits I needed   :disappointed:

I know what you mean Jo, this is my last year as well. It's been about four years since I last attended and a real marked down turn in content (in my opinion). Having said I did come away with a couple of bits and pieces but nothing that I could not phone them up for.

Don't think I will be going to Alley Pally again either, as you say Jo, it's not the easiest place to get to, for us it means a drive up to Farnham to daughters, then a train to London, Tube across London, bus to site and back, a time consuming and not inexpensive journey.  To be disappointed when I got there would be too much.  Sad to see no Bristol show this year but often in France then anyway, but I liked that show.  Midlands show also involves a drive, to daughters in Gloucester.  But at least from there it's not an onerous drive to the show and one can then park right outside the hall, a major bonus for me!

Chris

PS I know one can park at Allly Pally but who on earth wants to drive in London these days?

It does seem that the area to the left hand end gets bigger each year and even more so this year with the Steam Punk Area and the isles get wider.

I tend to view it that if the cost of the ticket equates to the postage on a few items I could have ordered then I'm not really out of pocket, think I bought from 8 separate stalls so certainly covered postage costs. I had 19 items on my list and got 17, did not really expect to get the other two as one was metric stock and the other I think only EKP sells.

Took me 1hr 20mins to drive across London and about 20-25mins longer getting home though the Scooby did not enjoy the 20mph limits.

HI All, I went on Saturday to the show and it was really packed and very difficult  to get to the trade stands with so many back packs !! I bought a few things and spoke to quite a few old friends .....I went with the Norridge  society and years ago the 52 seater bus was full but recently it only has about 26 ..... Yes there does seems to be more space although all the seating chairs and tables were well attended !! I will continue to go to the shows as in our club the Coach trip is being subsidised by the clubs pecunary directive. What i did see ,was, that the quantity of models on display was superseded by the size of the exhibits .Jo, I did miss the Bridport Foundry stand that features in one of your photos, they had a lot of castings available of various stationary models and if i had seen it i would have purchased a few of there flywheels for future projects...I did however buy some part machined flywheels from the RDG stand at quite reasonable prices i thought, and was quite surprised to see them there !!

I went on Sunday with my 8 year old son. We go every year, but its only 25 mins drive for me and we just regard it as a fun day out and some one-to-one boy time as the girls opted out as soon as they were given a choice :-)

Didn't have a shopping list really but came away with some nice new sharp USA made files, a nice number 2 Thor for the boys growing tool kit and a pair of RC 'battle tanks' that we spent the whole evening playing with. Turns out mummy is secretly the best tank commander in the whole family!

I think its smaller than ever but at the moment it has sufficient to keep us amused.

What I am surprised at is the paucity of 'moving' stuff. I am sure back in the Wembley Conference Centre days they had a big pool (well a pool that seemed big to a small child) for RC boats and also a racing arena for RC cars, all of which added a bit of a buzz to the proceedings. I know they have the planes and the (yawn!) truck area but I am sure more of the like would improve things. At least the Gauge 1 guys and the 16mm steam people put on a bit of a show :)

Yes the other MEX put on by MAP at the time at Wembly had car racing every day in the conference hall, boat pool and a straight length of track up on one of the balconies for train rides only down side was they made you wait outside until opening time.

They sure scared the beans out of that duck! One of the guys over here made a RC duck decoy once, and made the mistake of getting too close to some of the Canada Geese with little ones at the pond, Momma Goose attacked, beat the snot out of the decoy, and sank it! They never did find it...
Here is another one, or maybe the same after they added a body...

Closest I have is my RC submarine shaped like a Great White Shark.

And my sea turtle submarine:
