air compressor fittings
« on: December 03, 2018, 08:09:48 PM »
Need some help...

I just got a Master Airbrush TC-40T. I'm liking it. Very quiet.
Tops out at about 40-ish PSI.
Just fine for airbrushing. I think it will be good for light cleaning as well.

However...nothing seems to fit.

The 1st photo shows the connector on the compressor and the hose that it came with.
That hose fits the connector but neither of my airbrushes.

The 2nd photo shows the two airbrushes. The unconnected ends are the same but the hoses are not interchangeable.

I need to get from the connector on the compressor to the hoses in the 2nd photo.
The hoses fit those standard 1/4 NPT nipples you see in the 2nd photo.

Basically I need an adapter...

1 end (female) needs to fit the air compressor connector in the 1st photo. The connector appears to be 3/8 OD but I don't know the thread count.
1 end (male) needs to fit the nipples (or air hoses) in the 2nd photo. The nipple (or rather that adapter in the nipple) appears to be 1/2 OD but I don't know the thread count.

I'm betting some of you fine members have run into this before.

Thanks.

Zee, that connector on the compressor looks like a BSP thread. It’s probably 1/8 or 1/4 BSP. BSP is a UK straight thread form for pipes. It's something analogous to NPT. You can get adapters from amazon.

Compressor looks to be 1/8", large end of the hosed 1/4" As you say probably NPT as you are in the states you should be able to get 1/8 to 1/4 adaptors easy enough

Or if you fancy making some swarf easy little job for a retiree

Jason, that looks like a straight thread to me. NPT is a taper thread. That’s why I think it might be a BSP thread.

The 'instructions' that came with the air compressor says...

"Usually, our air compressor outlet is 1/8" BSP."

I don't like that word 'Usually'. And it says "If you want 1/4 BSP or other NPT screw thread, you may need other adapters fix on the outlet."
I don't like that word 'may' and the sentence is as it was printed.

There is nothing on that compressor connector that even smells of 1/8.
A measurement-ish of the ID is just under 1/4.

I understand I need an adapter. The question is what to get. What's the specification? Besides 1/8, 1/4, BSP, NPT.
It seems to be about the OD of that connector and it's thread count.

I'm not opposed to making my own. That was the first thing I looked at. But I can't figure out what die/tap to use.
I've never done single point threading (internal or external) and must admit to not being in the mood.

A link to an Amazon adapter would be fine.

Correct me if I'm wrong...the 1/8 or 1/4 refers to the ID and NPT means pipe threading (i.e. a slight taper). No?

Like those standard nipples. The ID is 1/4 but the OD appears to be 1/2 NPT of some kind of thread count.

Thanks.

Need some help...

Hello Zee,

I found a source on Ebay that offered 6 (I think) various fittings to adapt your hose to almost every Airbrush and compressor. Sorry, I looked for my paper work but could not find it. Search on Ebay for "airbrush fittings" .

Have a great day,
Thomas

You are trying to apply logic to inferial dimensions, there is none.

According to Machinery's Handbook, 1/8 NPT taper is 27 tpi and the outside diameter of the pipe is .402. 1/8-27 NPT straight the outside diameter is .39 or so.

You also seem to have 2 different brands of airbrushes, one is a Paasche H, the other ? Likely not compatible threads at the brush end. One of those 'many sizes' airbrush adapter kits will solve that. Even better, get an adapter for each to go to a quick connect, then you only need one hose. The airbrush specific adapter will end with a 1/8 BSP, which is then standard for the quick disconnects, hoses from HF etc. TCP Global is a good source in US.

I ran into same thing on my airbrush, and quickly found there were several different threads used on the ends of the hoses. Since I wanted to use my big compressor with it, I wound up buying an adaptor (actually several till one fit), and bodging up an adapter to a spare quick disconnect fitting on the big air hose. Some of the brands like picking a unique thread to lock you into their parts and compressors. Sort of like the oddball thread on the nose of a Dremel.

Thanks all.

I'll spend the bucks and get a set of fittings and give it a go.

I did come across TCP Global. I'll look into that again.

I bought the Paasche (single action) recently, thinking that's what I had. But the older one is a Badger (dual action).

I'm wanting to learn airbrushing and the dual action has been difficult for me. Most likely a matter of practice but I wanted to see how a single action works as well.

Eventually I'll go quick-connect but I need to first figure out what I have and need.

Thanks again!

Zee, do you have a screw pitch gage to check TPI?
Very handy to have (both metric & imperial) for checking threads....

Thanks John. No, I don't have a screw pitch gauge. I thought I did but what I have doesn't seem to correspond to anything.

I haven't heard from Marv in a long time. I think he has another method.

Will you please QUIT using the letters NPT  for STRAIGHT threads ?  The pipe threads that are STRAIGHT are NPS   :-)  the T stands for TAPER
Thank you . :-)

Zee,
Failing having a thread pitch gauge you can hold a 6" rule next to the threads count them off, multiply by whatever portion of an inch and voila tpi. 1/8 would be 27 1/4 & 3/8 are 18. The hoses appear to be some sort of compression fitting. I have one of those air brushes around I think its a Paasche double acting. Had grandiose ideas of painting models or something, never used it. :wallbang: Maybe by the time I want to paint something (w/o a can) I'll figure out where I parked it.
