Midlands Model Engineering Show 2018
« on: September 29, 2018, 08:01:56 AM »
The next big UK model engineering show is only a few weeks away the Midlands Model Engineer show. I was just wondering if anyone else was planning on going and if we could meet up for a coffee  :)

Like last year I am planning to go on the Thursday to pick up some Alyn Foundry castings from Andy (Chipmaster)  :pinkelephant: I know a couple of our members are having a display table at the show but I will let the Mike's tell you about what they are taking.

I will be picking up my ticket this coming week as they are cheaper if you book in advance and even cheaper if you buy in bulk via a club  ;)

I might go but will decide the day before depending on what work I have on and the weather.

That means I will pay full price for my ticket rather than blag a freebee, can't complain about the loss of shows if you don't support them by paying for entry. ;)

blag a freebee  :o

This is my Xmas present and fuel compensation for picking up some flywheels - full discounted priced was paid to the show organisers for my ticket (but not by me  :mischief: )

Mike Tull, Harry Williams and myself are sharing a stand at the Midlands show. we should have 10 engines on display.

I am taking 7 engines, Harry will have a Gnome and a Anzani Y type and Mike is taking his brilliant Bristol Jupiter.

I'm hoping to be there everyday and Mike is hoping to be there Friday and Saturday.

     See you there.

Normally I bring along the cakes to the shows ::)

No castings.

I already have my orders in for new castings  :naughty: and someone is hoping to relieve me of an existing set   :noidea:

Jo

P.S. DVD-R discs can also be used for normal file storage e.g. model engine drawing back ups

Subaru fuelled up, tyres checked, oil level checked, washer bottle topped up.  :) Jaffa Cakes (40), Crimbo Slurp  :wine1:    and gash pot-plants ( plants in pots that is  >:D ) ready to load.

Looks like being a fine day. All we need is for the roads to stay clear of pillocks .. .  Probably shouldn't have mentioned that ...

Alas, no castings ...  :'(

And I took home a set of castings from said young lady.

Good day, found the bits I went for, AND a few I didn't. :cartwheel:  Best deal was a Excel 2 ton Arbor Press as near as brand new as can get, still with RS Components label on it.  RS £247 + VAT, Home and Workshop £54 +VAT.

Loved all the engines on the IC Engine Builders stand and good to chat to Mike Cole again.

Appeared to be very well attended with lots of people there.

A great day out and good to be able to catch up with Jo, Jason and some of the others. Jason has also managed to get photos of the stuff I failed to get pictures of.

No castings or arbor presses for me I'm afraid, I'm already marginal on my baggage limit for the trip back to NZ

Hi all,

The Midlands show turned out to be very good and I also met Jo and Jason and had a chat about various things.

Now have all the required castings from Blackgates for the Clarkson Twin build and must say that the quality is better than the originals I have, so hopefully no chill spots on the trunk guides, and now no excuses for delays in turning the castings into the required shapes and hopefully correct dimensions as well.

Just got home absolutely worn out but had a brilliant day. Such superb craftsmanship (or should that now be craftspersonship?) on display and some very friendly knowledgeable people ready to answer the most stupid questions for me.  Met a couple of other forum members, it is nice to be able to put a face and voice to members. Even SWMBO didn't nag about the money I spent on things that I just can't live without.  :lolb: :Jester: :censored:  Many thanks to Brian for giving me a lift.   :old: :DrinkPint:

This video of the show was posted on another forum and may give our American members an idea of the other activities and subjects that can be seen at a UK show, not just the ic and stationary engines that tend to get posted here.

Given the recent discussion regarding the state of the hobbys future this video is singularly disappointing. I watched it a couple of times and strained to scan the crowd shots searching for anybody that did not have white hair. Unless this is a 'seniors only hour' it amply demonstrates that the hobby is supported overwhelmingly by a declining demographic. Not only where there no young ones present but there were no 30 or 40 year old parents of young ones either. The future appears obvious. Regards, Paul Gough.

Paul, it's a Friday today, the youngsters are at school, their 30-40 year old parents are at work, hence all the white hair mob.  But you're right!

Hi Pete,
Clothes are over rated for homecoming trips! Full your bags with tools!
We got home Monday from Canada. Wifey hates putting ANYTHING in checked luggage that MAY mean the bag gets opened. SO the Snow Globe for the grand monsters she had put in carry on, (cause the wind up bit may cause problems) stayed at customs, the wind up bit wasn’t the issue, the globe was over 100 mills! MY bits go thru no problem!

Cheers Kerrin
Get excited and make something!
