Hello everyone
« on: September 25, 2018, 04:12:32 PM »
I have been on this excellent forum for awhile and have failed to introduce myself. My name is Matt Hanson and I live in Galesburg IL. I recently have aquired some machine tools and am pursuing the model engineering hobby as I have wanted to for many years. I am a journeyman industrial electrician for the John Deere harvester works in East Moline IL. Including two degrees in industrial technology I collectively have 36 years in manufacturing of various types.

:hi: Matt,

Have you thought about what sort of model you would like to make first?

Welcome to our “shop” Matt. If you are really wanting to pursue model engineering, you came to the “right house” . We have members that range from rocket scientist to BBQ cooks (myself) and all are willing to help, encourage, praise, and enjoy your participation. Find a place for your tools and make yourself at home.

Well I have a couple of engines going on. One is the Corliss that is featured here and the other is the Perkins hit and miss. I sometimes get bored working on one engine and like to switch to another one for awhile.

Hello Matt, Galesburg IL is also the home of Roland Freistead, who was a writer for HOME SHOP MACHINIST for many years and also home of several CNC workshops. I think he is now mostly into model airplanes, and last I heard was re-publishing lots of very old model magazines. You might want to look him up.

I enjoyed several visits to Galesburgh for the CNC workshops. One year in June guys claimed if you listened carefully you could hear the corn grow. It must have grown 2-3 inches in the few days we were there.

Hi Matt, welcome to MEM!

The motor mount/belt drive units on my converted CNC knee mill are Roland's designs from HSM, I even purchased the belt covers from him probably 21-22 years ago.

Glad to have you aboard,
Dave
