Poor thing is stuck fast. I tried a gentle waft with a soft brush but no go. Quite big for a British house spider. About 30mm across.

Ah well. At least I have documentary evidence of something dafter than I am ... 

Frost last night .. a dash of coffee in my rum this morning. Winter Regime I think ...

That's rather small for a house spider. Maybe its the cold weather up there  Down south we get nice big ones often nearer 100mm across (including the legs).

I love the way they like to run across the floor just as you have settled down to watch the goggle box and stop between you and the box to do their press ups. They don't seem to have done it so much since my ex-husband left, maybe they have realised I am not frightened of them so its less fun than it once was

Don't think House Spiders get that big     You get Cardinal Spiders in the south, never seen one up here but have when I've worked in Surrey ages ago.

I see the males snuff it after mating ....    In my younger days when I was on 30+ smokes a day I know how they feel ....

Never seen one myself. I wonder what the UK distribution is ?  The map seems to suggest all of it.  Hmmmm.

Biggest I've ever seen are the Raft Spiders in the Fens  ( ONCE ! )  and those Cardinal wotsits .

They seem to be fairly harmless, can't see why your ex is/was so aggrieved by them   Unless one got in bed with eight cold feet. That would be a bit of an annoyance .. 

Anyway, I have to report my little friend has popped off. A goner     A small puff of compressed air detached him. He landed up against the wall, his legs folded up.  Maybe the solvent got at him. 

Our meeting was brief but strangely memorable.

I shall raise a glass to his memory tonight.

Can I ask that you do the same

They also held the Guinness Book of World Records, record for speediest spider (until 1987 when a half spider/scorpion thingy got the new record  )

The great thing about the giant house spider is the way they have a habit of running up your arms if you try to catch them in your hands so it is great training for those of you who have arachnophobia
