What do newcomers find useful?
« on: September 18, 2018, 08:06:13 AM »
I was looking back through my YouTube channel for the video of a particular trial and noticed that one of the most viewed recent videos was this one of turning down the end of a crankshaft.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ja-FeB2Mgkc" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ja-FeB2Mgkc</a>

It didn't seem to be anything special to me at first but then I thought that for someone starting out with a lathe on their own doesn't know how it should sound, what the swarf should look like, should there be smoke coming off etc. Would it be helpful to include more short videos of machining operations to give an idea of how they look and sound?

What does the panel think?
Best regards

Roger

It would be nice to see more machining videos.

As for the sound microphones have a habit to picking up the lathe motor noise rather than the tool cutting noise (or Eric's nattering when you are trying to demonstrate how loud Mr Silky is on top speed  )

When I started this hobby a few years ago, those kinds of videos were very helpful in seeing setups, speeds, sounds, etc.
I've sometimes thought about a library but that's a massive project in organization, not to mention searching.
Like you Roger, I sometimes just go cruising the internet.
