Chester Super Lux
« on: November 25, 2018, 11:53:50 AM »
My motor has just failed.  It just hums.  Suggestions have been that it needs a new start capacitor.

It is a CD60, 250v 150 microfarad.

Anyone have any suggestions as to where to purchase other than Hong Kong.

Thanks,

Colin

Did you try Amazon UK?
I could see some with that specification there.
Type CD60 in the search box.

If you told us where you are it may be easier to suggest a location.  :-)

Have you tried Chester for a spare?

Hi Colin.

As Jason has suggested, do try Chester for a replacement first.

Is your Lux a belt drive?

Cheers Graham.

Not tried Chester as yet.  It only failed late yesterday afternoon.  I tried it again this morning and it hummed first attempt and then started several time quite happily.

Mill is geared head.

It has been suggested that I get a high voltage rated capacitor. e.g. 450v.  I am opposite he local substation and know that my voltage is quite high.  I have a UPS which regularly was holding power down as it was seeing high 250 volts plus.

Hi Colin.

Before the MD gave me a Bridgeport copy to " play " with we used to use a Lux for the little jobs at the Chester works.

As it's working again the fault may be be the centrifugal switch that's inside the motor rather than the capacitor.

Cheers Graham.

Colin,
I just thought I'd throw this out there. My lathe at work an Enco did the same thing. It would hum very loudly and turn slower than normal. Under the fan cover were some contacts what were stuck together. after un-sticking them powering up the lathe & trying the on switch it worked as normal. It was about $250 the first time to find it was such an easy fix the next time. I think it was part of the starter circuit and was sticking on. Two of the screws that held on the cover were a PITA to remove & install. Someone else might have a better idea what exactly was going on. Just make sure you shut off the power, unplug it if possible before you start digging around in it. Good Luck.

Like Graham said, that's what was wrong with ours.

okay, looks as though I need to get the cover of the motor.  Not the easiest place to get to.  Lower the head right down and get the steps out.

Job for later in week as I have a work job (wifi access point failure)  on customer site in morning.

A number of tests as suggested from ME web site have determined that it is most likely the centrifugal switch.

Unfortunately this is not located in the rear of the motor casing so I need to remove the motor to check the front casing.

I have removed the 4 cap head bolts holding motor to the head/gear casing.  The motor and base plate will spin round but I do not have the strength to lift it up or there is something else holding it.  The flange is completely flat against the head and cannot get a screwdriver in to ease it up and out.

Any ideas, I do not want to break a lug of the flange.
