Making a one shot oiler manifold
« on: August 26, 2018, 12:20:50 AM »
In the shop renovation thread I had alluded to the need to make an oil  distribution manifold for the Mill's one shot oiler system. Since this piece has no metering of oil involved, it's a fairly straight machining job for an original part cast out of potmetal ( or what some call zamac). The replacement is being made from brass and should last two lifetimes. Since this is the first distribution branch downstream from the oiler itself, it needs to be functional and two of the three spigots on the OEM part had broken.

I started with the base block and whittled a rectangle from a piece of 2" dia brass ( photo 1). Photo 2 shows the counterbored hole for mounting it to the side of the Mill's knee. In photo 3 I have added three .500" x .100" deep counterbored holes for the one branch coming into and the two branches exiting the block to the rest of the outer distribution system. The spigots will be made from .500" dia. Brass rod and drilled/ threaded for the compression fittings.  Should get those made tomorrow and plan to soft solder them into the block since there isn't much pressure involved. More to come....

What is a 'one shot' oiler?  :headscratch:
Other than a glass of something tasty...

Chris, there are various types but basically you pull a spring loaded handle and a fixed amount of oil (somewhat slowly) is distributed through small lines through various manifolds and at the end of each line there is a metering nozzle to equalize the pressure through the system so all of the oil doesn't just go through the path of least resistance. These lines typically lubricate the ways, lead screws, etc. all from the one reservoir.  This can be more automated on modern CNC machines and controlled pneumatically or by the control software. For nanual machines you might do this once a day or each shift in a production environment.  I will try to get some pictures tomorrow of the other parts on the mill.

Got this little project finished up today. I made the three spigots this morning ( photo 1). Then soft soldered them into the manifold (photo 2).  Photo 3 shows one of the tubes installed with it's compression fittings.  Photo 4 shows it installed on the mill and the last photo shows one of the main distribution manifolds just under the table. After filling the oul pump with way oil I pumped the handle a couple of times and didn't see any leaks so I'm calling this little repair done.

Hi Bill,

That's the best looking part in the whole oiler system.
