Idea to keep open shelf clean
« on: August 21, 2018, 04:02:47 PM »
Hello everyone,

Since I have re-arranged my shop, the open storage shelf  is now in a corner and next to the Mill. To prevent swarf from getting all over the tools and on each shelf, I purchased a clear shower curtain and installed it around the two open sides. I attached a wood strip along the top in front and on one end. This allows the curtain to be secured to the wood all along the top. I split the curtain in the middle in the front and allowed about 6-inches of overlap. This allow me easy access to all the tools and keeps it closed when I release either part of the curtain.

I also install a folding panel on a hinge on the end of the shelf. As you can see, I have already installed the T-Slot Clamping Kit and have room for more items to be added later.

Hopefully the new lathe will be in soon and I can get it set up.

Have a great day,
Thomas

Nice idea Thomas. That should keep most of the swarf out if not all.

Great idea, plus it gives the shop elves a place to shower...

Looks good!
Watch out for those blue steel chips-they will make lots of C shaped marks! :naughty:

Hey Chris,

That is too funny.....don't need any water on the tools.

I have some T-Slot nuts to machine and this should give the curtain a good test run. If this works good, I have two work tables with open shelves that I will fix up.

Have a great day,
Thomas

Hey again,

Just made six T-Slot Nuts and the curtain worked perfect, and Bill you were right, nothing got inside on the shelves.

Scott I was only turning 600 rpm so not enough heat or speed to throw any hot chips on to the curtain and leave any marks.

The curtain was only $5 bucks at Walmart so if it needs replacing in a couple of years, no problem. I used stainless steel staples to fasten the curtain on to the wood and they will be easy to remove.

Zee, the panel works real good and saves me some space. Getting to the hold down items is really handy.

Have a great day,
Thomas

Hey everyone,

Just a short follow up on the "curtain" chip guard. I have done quite a bit of Mill work and some at a higher speed throwing chips past the lathe and nothing has entered the shelves. I am very happy with the way it has turned out.

Have a great day,
Thomas
