You're way ahead of me on this build.
I'll take a seat in the front row and follow.

This is a fitting job,

I'll sit next to Marcello if he doesn't mind and watch too.

Looks very interesting.
I did a quick search on 'simpson and shipson' but only came across a few hits on model forums (like ours!).
Are there any pics?

Carl,
there's a typo in the name, that's "Simpson and Shipton"

If You're looking for pictures of the real one, I found none.
Stew's build was well documented on MadModder.

Jonesie

You're getting to a couple of critical features.

Connecting rods:- the hole centres on all four rods must all be the same, the exact size is not that inportant but they must all be the same.

Bearings:- you must get the centre height of the bearings correct, measure the height of the crank shaft centre from the base plate and make the bearing centre height the same, I had to make small adjustment to the height by shimming under the bearings with ally baking sheet, if you get it wrong it just wont turn over it will be tight at top or bottom dead centre depending which way its out.

thanks for the heads-up stew,   i will make sure the holes are the same and will make sure my bearing heights are right.this is a nice design and is a real fun build, think the curved spooks on flywheel will look good, the casting is first class, got it from martin model and pattern.i have used his casting before and they all have been first class. thanks again. just made a note on prints for these heads up so i do not  forget. jonesie

well i have the parts all made  will post a pic real soon. this is a question for stew or anyone else who has timed one of there.stew i have the drawing that you sent me as far as the timing, but not being real  well versed on timing of steam engines. i did get the popcorn timed and running good but now i am stuck.what i am asking is if you have any more pics or drawings you could sent me or post on here as to the position of all the parts on the piston rod and then down to the rods on the steam chest.also having trouble with old and stiff fingers in tiny spaces but i will over come that on my own.thanks stew or anyone else with help or drawings. just hpoe i can get it to run as good as yours stew, it is looking good . pics coming soon. thanks jonesie

Hi Jonesie

Pleased you've made good progress.

attached pdf drawing of timing geometry

First with the cylinder at top dead centre you have to set the crank arms at 90 deg to each other, on either side of the piston rod and the crank shaft so that connecting rods are working in parallel, so that the engine turns over smoothly, this is not easy to do, patience is the thing her.

You can see this in the vid

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxpAIlInObk" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxpAIlInObk</a> frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

With the crank arms set and the engine turning over nice and free, you can now set the piston valve, this is easy to do, with the cylinder on top dead centre slacken off the eccentric and turn it in the direction of rotation and watch for the piston valve to start to apear in the exhaust port when you see about 0.5mm of it tighten the eccentric grub screw, and the timing should be set.

Hope that makes sence:- looking forward to your completed pictures.

Stew
