Cowells 4 Way and Groovers Toolposts
« on: August 15, 2018, 02:02:25 AM »
The third set of tooling I made for the Cowells lathe is a 4 Way Tool post and a Grooving Tool Post Holder.    These were designed to use Arthur Warner  1/4” tooling.  The tooling is very consistent with respect to height so that when changing inserts tool height remains OK.  The Grooving Tool also has a threading insert.  The 4 Way is straight forward machining and tapping.  You need to know your center height so the height of the bottom platform of the tool post can be calculated.  The same for the Groover which actually needs to be below the compound top, see photos.  I had some 4140 so I used it for the blocks.  I did not harden it.  I have a surface grinder so all the surfaces were ground for appearance.  The bottom of the 4 Way was left thicker and ground to the desired thickness.  The same for the Groover Block.  It was suggested by a fellow modeler to try 1144 stressproof rather than using 12L14 as it is less likely to rust.  I found it machined and finished very nice.  I used that for the handled locking nut and washer.  The washer is used under the nut.  I ground it until the handle locked out of the way.  The same washer and handled locking nut are used for both holders.

I have included some drawings.

Now it is off to making some parts with the Cowells.

That all looks very neat Bob  : I always use a home made four -way TP, and ditto rear toolpost on my Cowell, though just set up with HSS tooling,  and find it works well for this small lathe.  Dave
