using a stepper motor to drive a leadscrew for threading
« on: August 14, 2018, 07:57:07 PM »
my lil lathe has a leadscsrew that can be driven from the head stock  but no facilities to change the gears
has any one considered using a stepper motor  and  Arduino  to drive it  at  various speeds  for threading
what do you mean it wont fit  Get a bigger hammer

Nige

You will need some form of electronic spindle encoder to feed the Arduino, in order to synchronise the rotation of the spindle and the leadscrew stepper motor, if you are considering screw threading. It can be done, it's a bit like an electric gearbox.

If you Google "Electronic Lead Screw" you will find lots of interesting stuff.

Bet you will be the first to do it to an Adept Lathe though.

It is the journey that matters, not the destination

Sometimes, it can be a long and winding road

Nige,

You may get away with out the shaft encoder if you do not want screw cutting, just power?? feed.

Even one pulse per revolution generally gives a nice thread I'm told - I have thought of adding steppers to my lathe even though it has a gearbox for the Z-axis, but I do not have all the gears and it's a drag to change + I really would like to have a feed on the Y-axis too.

Best wishes with your project
