tail stock modification quetion
« on: August 02, 2018, 07:35:07 PM »
evening all from a hot West london. this may sound like an odd question Buuuuuuuuuuuut
I have a Simat 101 lathe it was a gizit  from a friend. the tailstock is a shortened mt 0 morese taper , all i  have is 1 small dead centre
the question
would it be feasible to bore out the tailstock to take a 1 MT or 2 MT so i  could use  other tooling in it such as a small Jacobs chuck ?

many thanks for comments  Nigel

Don't do it  :hellno:

Set up your lathe to turn some 0mt blanks. Or fork out some cash  :paranoia: to Cowells for some of their 0Mt blanks - you only need one to set up to cut the taper ;)

If all else fails you can visit and Mr Silky can turn some blanks for you  ;)

The Sherline lathes use the short mt0 taper, they have a selection of live centers you could use as is. Also they have jacobs chucks and adapters for that size.

the trouble with the sherline  taper  is  its the wrong part of the taper  theirs is cut off  and they use the thick end
the Simat uses  the thin end

Could use one of these taper adapter to build a new replacement for the inside of the tailstock.

Depending on how many you need I'm with Jo, order one from cowells to duplicate or if you don't need many just order what you need. As noted, the sherline ones won't work.

I have an earlier version of this lathe that I am renovating for "small" work. I bought a MT0 centre off fleabay and used that to set the crosslide angle to make some blanks in various size diameter bar. The blanks can then be turned to fit a small chuck, revolving center, etc. It has made a very nice usable small lathe to sit on work table. I could not find a supplier for the shortened MT0 taper either. It is either turn your own or cut down a full length one..... Hope this helps John

Just another thought  if you are thinking about buying/changing the chuck check the thread as they had two different sizes depending on the age of lathe. Earlier ones (mine) was a 14x1.5mm thread but the later ones were changed to 14x1.0 thread the same as several other makers. My job in Wesley's Shed tonight has been turning a backplate for my Simat. Have fun, John :DrinkPint:

Quite right Jo the early version Flexispeed had 1/2" thread but I think by the time they became Simat they had gone to the 14mm spindle thread.
Lots of information and pictures can be found at lathes.co.uk. John

while waiting for my collet chuck to arrive  i have revisted the tail stock issue
the 0MT  holder actually comes out and is a 1 piece item with the taper bore, a keyway to keep it true and a thread on the end for adjustment .

this gives 2 options
1. make a new  one with a 1 or 2 MT internal taper    or 2  have an engineering works  accurately boe out the existing

comments please and if its 2 any suggestions  for a suitable  company  to do it in  W London

What is the diameter of the tailstock barrel? I am thinking it is way too small for an internal MT2 taper.

I found that an MT1 taper wouldn't fit, that is why I suggested turning your own MT0 short taper blanks.  The headstock on mine is tapered the same as tailstock, usefull for turning between centres. John
