Names and sign offs...
« on: July 27, 2018, 12:43:06 AM »
It's been brought up many times before...but still worth a request or reminder...

With respect to a person's profile (their pic to the left)...I really enjoy knowing where a person is located. Doesn't have to be an address, or city...a country would do. Or even a continent.

It helps when questions are asked...but it's also just interesting to me to see the global nature of shared interests.

With respect to a person's sign-off...It helps me to know a person's name...at least their first...when it comes to replying.
For example, you all know me by Zee or Zeeprogrammer...but my sign off has my name...Carl.
So I go by Zee, Zeep, or Carl...(and sometimes "hey" but never "hey you"). At home I may be known as 'idiot' or 'turd'...all of which are endearing terms.

So please take a moment and update your profiles and sign-offs.
I find you all interesting.
Carl (aka Zee) Will sometimes respond to 'hey' but never 'hey you'.

Yes it does really help aside from just being interesting where everyone is from. It's also nice to have a name if not obvious in the screen name or profile. Thanks for the reminder Carl.

I have to agree. That information  just makes the forum much more personal..

My location is listed in my profile but doesn't show up when I post on the forum. What am I doing wrong?

Not a bug. Having the personal text show rather than the location field allows each member to customize or opt out as desired.  The signature field can also be used and will show at the end of each post.

Another vote for showing your location under your avatar.  I, and probably many others, won't bother to look up your profile to find your location.

Also, don't expect people to know where every small town in the world is located.  Specify the state/province/territory or country.

Be careful with abbreviations. As an example, 'CA' is the US abbreviation for California but it's also the international abbreviation for Canada.

Thanks for the information. I made the change.

You lucked out.  The international code for the nation of Georgia is "GE" so you didn't need to add "USA".

I'm just poking fun.  Thanks for making the change.

Most people wouldn't realise that "Warton" is still trying to be recognised as a formal part of Mordor ;)

I too like to know where in the world the people are. A general idea of where someone is makes it a lot easier to answer questions they may ask.----Brian

Hi all,
Sorry if I am a little paranoid but I purposely didn't put the city I live in because anyone could look me up in the phone book, yes I still have a landline phone, see when I am gone at one of the shows from the posts here and clean out my shop. Or barring that, the light mobile stuff that could be easily loaded into a car.
On the flip side, I have folks I visit because they posted their city and state under their avatar. One person in particular I've become very good friends with and visit every time I'm in Akron PA, visiting my in-laws. And two other people in SE Pennsylvania who post regularly on the forum. So I may have to rethink that because I personally wouldn't mind members of the forum stopping in for a visit if they were in the Madison area.
Sorry, didn't mean to write a novel.

You don't even have o include the city Art. Just the state will help in many cases.

I certainly understand people's concerns about privacy (having recently been a victim)...
So I/we don't need a city, state, province, territory, etc.
But knowing the country is priceless when it comes to answering questions, asking questions, or saying things that may be well known in one country but not another.

And sure, I understand there may even be concern about country with respect to cultural differences...but I think this forum is very inclusive and more importantly, would shut down anyone that disrespects another member's country in any way.

Further, it's quite clear from a person's posts where they (probably) are. It's hard to hide behind language, colloquialisms, references, current affairs, other interests (like gardening) etc. So it just makes it easier for everyone.

That said...if someone still doesn't want to help us know what part of the world they are in...that's okay too.

Well I'd be happy for people to drop in for a chat if they're in the area, but it will depend how they're travelling - one does not simply walk into Mordor...
