Air Powered Hit and Miss Engine
« on: July 05, 2018, 12:43:56 AM »
I just finished my Air Hit and Miss Engine. It was designed by Chuck Fellows, and I used the plans from Brian Rupnow.
This was an interesting build. There are many small (fiddly) parts to make, and it took some adjustments to get it to run.
The first video is the first run, and the second one is after I made some adjustments to slow it down.

Scott--Marvelous engine!! I built that engine just after Chuck published the design. Chuck is a master at air powered engines.---Brian Rupnow

Thanks, everyone!
I still have to make a base for the engine and do some fettling (love that word!), then on to the next project!

That is very nice, with a great hit and miss sound.

Thank You Scott for another great build to watch and listen to.

Thank You Chuck and Brian.

Hello everyone,
I have done some fine tuning on my motor to get it to run like an IC Hit and Miss.
I adjusted the governor spring, and I had to make another valve actuator. The first one was brass, and wore out rapidly.
I remade the part out of tool steel, and it is holding up well.
The Oak base is complete, and it is ready for the shows!

You nailed the sound Scott  And a lovely engine as well. Love the oak base too, but I am partial to oak.

Great runner.
Can someone share the link to Chuck's original plans? Or info on obtaining Brian's version?

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

You can find Brian's build on the HMEM site here: https://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/threads/brian-rupnow-build-hit-and-miss-air-steam-engine.4585/
You may also find some of the drawings he used. Don't know if these:http://www.john-tom.com/MyPlans/SteamPlans3/HitAndMiss/Hit_n_Miss.pdf  were the plans you were looking for?

Thanks for your interest.
I usually build I.C. engines, but it is difficult to keep them all running at the same time at the shows. The air hit and miss will run all day with minimal adjustments, and make the right sounds, etc.
These are the plans I used    https://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/threads/another-chuck-fellows-engine-as-built-by-brian-rupnow.29267/#post-307097
