Horizontal Mill Engine
« on: August 10, 2018, 04:40:08 PM »
Recently completed Horizontal Mill Engine, based on a Clarkson 2 x 2in design, I redesigned it to be more prototypical using photographic reverences
I built the Clarkson some 35 years ago, while looking for other drawings I found the original and thought it would be fun to make it again only from stock material rather than castings. I had built a Bensons vertical last year from stock and liked the idea.
The mill engine is made from cast iron bar for the cylinder and trunk guide, ali for the base and plumber blocks, the rest from steel, the flywheel is a casting.

Very nice!

I wouldn't mind seeing a pic of the other side. That wheel looks interesting.

Thanks for your kind remarks

Zee the wheel you refer to is to operate the reversing gear as per original design, when I built the first version I made a lever reverser like on a loco.

And I very much like what you did with the brass and the paint.    Mirror polish brass doesn't work so well on models, but that does.   As does a matt paint.   Shows the detail much better!

Well done!

Mike,

Great looking engine and I love the tiled base - could you give some more details on how you did it?

Thanks again for the generous comments. The tiled floor was found on e-bay it’s self-adhesive dolls house covering.

There are many highly skilled ME’s on this site, it’s very encouraging for others efforts to be acknowledged.
