Whats this
« on: July 02, 2018, 01:30:46 AM »
Hey guys,
Came across a video of a most  lovely engine on U tube.
I am going to show my absolute ignorance here here by asking "WHATS THIS"   :headscratch: (bottom Picture)

I'm guessing its a pump, but what does it pump... water?  I don't think so. I have heard of a steam pump but never really seen or researched them at all.

Or am I over thinking it. Looking at the rotary valves Mb its just a high pressure cylinder in tandem.  :headscratch:

If it is a pump, could someone please explain who or what it is and how it works and why please.

Here is the link to the video also,

Thanks in advance.

Here is their website, click on the Wasp Mill link down the left side for that one. Great collection of engines there!

WOW, great site, thanks.

Yeah now I have viewed the video a few more times its bloody obvious what it is. LOL.       :-[
I had never seen a round style cylinder with corliss valve gear before.  Guess I have now..

May I ask another stupid question then. Why do so many tandem engines seem to run a mix of slide valve and rotary valve in tandem, rather than just one or the other  :headscratch:

I went there last year and it is well worth a visit, if you do go I'd advise going on one of the steaming days though.

The 'Sissons teaching engine' briefly seen at 1m 06sec was a peculiar thing, I can't quite remember exactly but from what I do remember it is actually 2 separate engines side by side and depending how it is configured they can work as a twin or independently of each other a different speeds and different directions. It also appears to have 2 valves per cylinder for some reason I can't remember  :headscratch:

HA  !  I WISH  Can u believe I have NEVER seen a stationary engine in the flesh (so to speak). probably the reason for my stupid questions LOL..

Closest I have come is a steam traction engine.  AHHHH   .... I have lived such a sheltered life...  :ShakeHead:
LOL
I have NOW found a club that has a running day once a year though in Melbourne. (Of coarse the last one was just last month)   LOL

It is on my calendar for next year..

The Corliss valve is more efficient in steam usage, so perhaps that's the reason for its use in the HP cylinder.  And maybe its complexity wasn't justified for the LP cylinder.  Just a guess on my part.
