A new gentler Photobucket, honest!

A refreshing postscript to the Photobucket failed attempt at ransomware...

https://www.bizjournals.com/denver/news/2018/05/17/photobucket-drops-pricing-that-angered-millions.html

When they pay me for all my time spent moving pictures to another hosting site and repairing picture-bearing forum posts, I'll be glad to consider sending them an explanation of what they can do with their newfound generosity and the lubricants required to do it.

Paywall for the link, but agree with MKlotz' sentiments.  I pay a modest sum to host my pics;  anything free is likely to become unfree eventually.

True enough but, with the Photof...et example in mind, it's likely that the charges won't be exorbitant.

had they taken this tact in the beginning, there'd have be no issue...instead idiot CEO who will now likely have to flip burgers took a different tact.  Thank goodness for social media - the equalizer; we get to object to corporate nonsense and be at least a little bit heard.  I say be like the Bluths, forget but NEVER forgive :D  Account deleted and no going back for me.

My own view (i.e. two cents or less)...

Early members were supporters that were willing to deal with the ads that supported the site.
They should have been grandfathered.

If the business model didn't support charging NEW members...then it wasn't a workable business model.

They could have tested that (but apparently did not).

Changing the terms to charge the early members was, in my mind, extortion.
i.e. Now that you 'customers' got a bunch a data stored here...we're going to lock it until you pay ransom.

Sure. I didn't read the fine print terms and conditions. Whether they could start charging.
I don't mind terms and conditions...but for the most part they are only in the vendor's interest and will always be such that they can extract ever more from us.

Having said that..even if I agree to some terms and conditions...then they are the ones I agree to. Don't be changing them on me. It's okay to make them different for new customers. It's up to new customers to agree or not.

I don't care if that's a burdensome hassle. Cost of business.

I moved to a hosting service called smugmug, and I recommend it. It's privately owned, and very professional. A bit more expensive than photomuckit was, but that's OK.

Just tossing out the recommendation for anyone looking for a hosting service.

Forging ahead regardless.
