Hi Bill,

It will be special to work on an engine using you dad's old lathe. Shop is looking better with each new update.

Have a great day,
Thomas

Thomas he will be happy to see it back in near new condition.

Day three of the AC install and it running and cooling. Another few hours tomorrow rechecking the freon, running a vent to the bathroom, and generally tidying up. It should be nice and cool tomorrow morning. This unit is really quiet too!!! (photo 1).

Meanwhile, while watching them do their thing, I started in on the lathe cleanup. I am taking it a section at a time, cleaning things well with acetone, in some cases down to bare metal, but definitely down below the built up grime. Photo 2 shows the headstock cleaned and masked as needed just after painting. Photo 3 is after the masking was removed. The last photo shows the tailstock which is also ready to go now.

running a vent to the bathroom,

I'm glad you understand priorities.
Nothing takes away from shop enjoyment more than an unexpected requirement.

Progress on multiple fronts, nice!
Are you going to re-side the shop? It doesn't seem to be in that bad of shape.

Yes as to residing and re-roofing too. It's worse than it looks Dave. That will be the final major thing. The rest of the inside stuff I can do myself...and now in a cool, low humidity environment too  :cartwheel:

No joke Zee. But the bathroom will be needing some interior renovations also.

The foundation masonary was finished for the house yesterday. One that is inspected, the plumbing will go in so the slab can be poured. No picture of that sorry.

You're lathe is looking mighty sharp there, Bill!  Are you going to be doing any internal cleaning too?  Taking things apart, cleaning & regreasing or anything like that?  Or just cosmetic work?

Great news on the progress on the shop and house.   When did you say you're planning on moving into your new home?

Yes, that lathe is looking very nice indeed. No surprise given the quality of your work generally!
Stuart

Forging ahead regardless.

Kim, yes I am doing some of that too, just not total disassembly. Though not shown in the pictures, I have redone the compound already and did take it apart. The same will be done for the cross slide and carriage. The head gears and quick change gearbox gears will all be cleaned and regreased though they are all in good shape as I never did much thread cutting on it and they are well protected from normal swarf and grime. The inside of the gear cover and spindle cover have also been cleaned and repainted as has the drive pulley cover.

Well, it's going to be a great machine when you're done with it!  You really get to know a machine well when you take it apart and rebuild it!  It gives you a special bond with the machine, doesn't it?

Very true Kim. And the family history adds to that as well.
