So I slept in a bit late this morning and then headed to the ol’ shid. Dave and Tug, quite a compliment considering both of your shops look like operating rooms. Kim, thanks and I couldn’t agree more. Ok, I decided to start on the flywheel to get in the groove for the day  8). I got it to run as true as possible in the four jaw chuck (forgot piccys) and then turned the long chucking lug to .500. I was then able to chuck it in the collet chuck and machine the diameter, both sides, one hub, drill, and, ream in one setup. I then was able to flip it and machine off the lug and finish the other hub.

With all but the grub screws installed I decided to start on the crankshaft. I cut the disc from a piece of 1/4” O2 flat bar. Set it up in the mill and drilled and reamed the holes for the shaft and big end pin. I’m not really happy with the radi on the disc, but, I think it’s okay. I then made the big end pin. Cut the shaft to length plus .010 and installed the disc with Locktite 680 and after that set I took very light cuts and put the profile on the disc. I really should have taken more pictures, but, I guess I was concentrating too hard  8). So here’s another  picture so y’all know it happened.

Oh yeah, one more for Kirk and Dave Otto. Did a little carbide shopping

Y’all stay safe

Sumitomo is nice stuff! Sorry that I have been slow in getting back to you on this. Looks like you made a wise choice.
I have a couple Sumitomo bars and have been purchasing my inserts form Bass Tool down in Texas; nice folks to deal with.

Oh, and the flywheel looks great! Any problems with chatter when only holding on to the hub?

Flywheel looks great.
Interesting crankshaft too. Gives me some ideas.

P.S. Chili Mac tonight. Made in an Insty-Pot. Good for traveling.  ;D
Not up to to her usual par...but for 'on the road'...can't be beat.
Not on the road yet. She's doing tests. I'm the tester. I love being her tester.

Bill, some days it just happens that way; today I felt like I was backing up  :lolb:  Dave, I think all that is Sumitomo are the inserts; look closely at the fit of the head to the bar. But the price was okay. Zee, I think you should do the “western road trip “ in one of these:

I had to Google the “insty cookers”   Here’s a funny on that thought: I just bought a new GMC pickup and it has a inverter driven 120v outlet. My salesman said that he had a woman come in with a brand new Yukon Denali complaining because it wouldn’t run four Crock Pots from a power strip  :lolb: :lolb:  Y’all come see us

We thought about it...with respect to today's vehicles for travel.
A bus would certainly take us back.
But we're older now...hotels are what we're going for.
Hotels are iffy...so we're taking our own pillows.  ;D

A little update guys. I’ve managed to finish the eccentric and strap. I decided to deviate from the drawings a bit and groove the eccentric instead of the strap, as KVOM and I have discussed. I made the eccentric from a piece of DuraBar, should wear well on the bronze strap. The rest of the shid time was spent just finishing some odd and ends. I have the bearing blocks for the crankshaft glued up and curing and will be the next victims. Sorry I didn’t take more pictures, but, the eccentric and strap were quite fiddly and I just didn’t take time for them. Anyway, here’s the frequently requested family shot so y’all will know it happened. Thanks for checking in and be safe

Eric

Admiral, Bill, and Dave, thanks for checking in. Dave, we use a whole lot of those towels and I feed the delivery guy really well, so, they are now the standard shop towel at the shop  8). Bill, I hope so. There is still a hidden boo boo that is about to come into play and may take some more engineering   Y’all stay tuned
