Piston pump
« on: July 30, 2018, 03:40:09 PM »
Hi guys.
Just completed my first mini model engine.
While this one doesnt actually fire, it just pumps air and inflates balloons. Before building this I had very little machining experience.

I used the lathe for the crank. Found zeroing the lathe in for depth hard. The tolerance were 0.01mm but kept missing.
The conrod was hand cut, was very out but still worked.
The cylinder was bored on a lathe, the one thing I did right.
The piston I created on the lathe, then use a cnc to do the dome.
The base was milled.
Then learnt how to use a mig welder and put itall together. This was a two week course and it took me about 80 hours to make this. Most of the time learning tbh lol.

Here is a photo of the master plan

Photo of setting up the aluminium stock in the lathe for the first time, 3 jaw chuck.
Might seem easy for you guys but when you hadnt done it before takes ages.
Machine was a benson and hodge, the dude running the show constantly told us how crap the machines were.

Congrats RL. Looks like a nice first project. Do you have machines available at home as well? What are you looking to do next?

Yep, posting them all right now.

Only have car related tools and a mig. Want to do an actual firing engine next time. Looking into getting a lathe.

Code: [Select]
Finished crank. Made a very rookie error of turning the x axis handle the wrong way hence the extra middle cut. Still pretty happy with it.

Test fit assembled.

Here is the spec sheet for the actual piston, probably the most complex piece I made.

And the finished product all welded together.

Pretty happy how it turned out. Any suggestions on a next project?

Nice pump. If you are looking for a second engine how about this :

It’s simple to make, forgiving and it looks good when it’s done

I second the idea of many of Elmers engines available on the same site. Find one you like and go for it. Most can be done with smaller machine tools also.

I don't know, AOG, but a 12 driver "engine" seems a bit advanced for a second project. :-)  Is that a UP 9000?

Sorry Marv but it’s nothing that fancy. It’s just your everyday garden variety  Challenger.
