Hardinge HLV-H carriage stop
« on: October 06, 2018, 04:38:57 PM »
Hi all, and especially Jo,

I am rescuing a carriage stop for my Hardinge HLV-H and have one screw missing at the back, which presses upon the gib and secures the assembly to the bed, and have identified the thread as being 3/8" * 26 tpi Whitworth, and have sourced a replacement.

However, at the front of the stop assembly there is a rotary vernier gauge, which is threaded though and there appears to be some form of locking system, but this is missing.

Can anyone shed any light on what I should be looking at sourcing or making in order to be able to lock the vernier, and I am attaching two photos for clarification.

Mr Silky's original bed stop had a knurled shouldered bolt in it.

However he uses a different bed stop designed by Mike Sayer  ;)

Unlikely to be whitworth Mike , usually UNC  (55 v 60 °)

Unfortunately I only have the dial gauge carriage stop so not sure how the micrometer one works . I can search around at work for one next week if I get the chance.

Oh hang on , if you want to see the rear lock screw.... runs outside to shed...

Hi Bill,

Your carriage stop is indeed the dial gauge variant and there is one for sale on eBay but at £125 or £145, which is way too much for me.

I have looked again and I think that you are correct and it is UNC and not Whitworth, so I will have to see what I can find as a UNC threaded grub screw.

Hi Jo,

Thanks for the pics and that is the same carriage stop as mine and any dimensions for the shoulder bolt will be greatly appreciated.
