I've largely completed the Stuart Oilfield Pump model from castings, but have come to a dead stop as to how to proceed making a display base. The model requires a raised pedestal on which the main model and it's driver will mount, and then a lower level where the pump will be secured.
I'd like to make it nice looking and somewhat scale (not just varnished wood). I would like the lower level to look like dirt/gravel/crushed stone, and was thinking it would look nice if the pedestal was made to look like brick with a stone top.
There is plenty of info on how to machine things out there, but I can find nothing on how to build the base. Should it be wood, and then covered? What kind? Aluminum? Where do I get the sheathing materials and how do I attached them? Any help appreciated. I'll grab a few pictures of the model shortly and post them. Thanks.
