Scaled Hoglet (Jr) project
« on: October 08, 2012, 03:26:31 AM »
Well I'm taking the plunge into making my first I.C. model engine !! I have made some trinkets and some tools. I started an air motor then broke a few (5) 0.020? drill bits and got frustrated !! So by that time summer had come and gone?now the cold fronts are moving in with the near future being winter :( !! I will pick the air motor up again later. Then I found and researched some of the Hoglet builds. Very intrigued with this motor since I own a couple bikes with similar engines I decided it was for me. Having limited machining ability and my tools are small bench type. I decided to ask about scaling down the down the Hoglet. Once I received my prints and read not to scale?well? it?s getting scaled !! I had and inquiry to help scale down the prints. So off the prints went to Ausdier in Australia. He is a member of the forum. I am very pleased with his skillful talent...as he does this for no fees...even better. He is very easy to get along with and correspondence is great !! Anyone out there needing this type of help just ask him !! This project won't be an overnighter...so bear with me on this my hopefully completed I.C. engine !!!
Well...here is what I have done so far....

These are the crankcases drilled and tapped. Still need to drill out hole for the crank for the bronze bushings.

I had to make a 21 degree angle block to make the above plus future parts...here is the start of it...

Here is the finished 21 degree block...

Here using a adjustable angle block to drill the holes...also to mill the top angle of the crankcase..no pic of that. It sticks out of the vise a bit...that's why I made the angle block..to the work piece lower in the vise.

Here is the 21 degree angle block used to cut the top plate angle of the crankcase. Seems I went out of order on the post...oh well...live an learn is always a lifelong journey ! Not sure if this was the best way, but it's what worked at the time.

Another pic for the evening...here is the crankcase assy and the angle block...almost completed except fot the bigger holes for the actual crank and cam bushings.

Looks like a lot of fun!

If I recall correctly, someone did a hoglet on another forum. A videoed 'happy dance' will be required when you get it running.  ;D

re: Do not scale print.

Means- Do not measure the print itself to get a non given dimension.

For example-  One side of rectangle is given on the drawing as 1.000, and you measure it as 2.000 directly on the drawing with your calipers.  Now you measure the missing side directly on the drawing and get 1.500.  You can't use this measurement and call the missing side's dimension .750.

That's how I've always understood it.

Good to see you have made a start on this one, it will be interesting top see how it comes out at the approx 6:10 reduction

What gear size and number of teeth have you ended up using?

I should say that V45 and I had a thread on another forum about reducing the size of this engine and at the chosen 6:10 reduction there is no direct gear combination that will fit a the reduced gear centres so larger or smaller gears will need to be used and the distance between shafts altered to suit which will also affect the length of the con rods if the crank is altered or the pushrod lengths if the cam is repositioned

Even the gears will be scaled so everything should look the same, only smaller. :)
I will make a drawing to make a cutter for the gears.

Thank you all for the support and interest. I have been anxious to build this Randall Cox design engine. Thanx Bob...I didn't know just don't measure the actual print !! Not sure if the "Happy dance" will happen..LOL !!

Hopefully all the pieces will come together with the scale and making the gears. I had talked with Ausdier thru email and as I haven't cut gears ever...I am willing to give it a try and make it work. We'll see how well I machine them
