The book has been good so far...
« on: April 02, 2018, 10:04:24 PM »
The book has been good so far and the next chapter should prove fun and enjoyable.

I'm retired!!!  :cartwheel: :cartwheel: :cartwheel: :cartwheel: :cartwheel:

When I got out of college and got my first job, T, a couple of friends, and I went out.
I started with a Pink Squirrel and then we all went on to Bailey's Irish Cream.
I have no idea why.
As I type this, I am book-ending my career with a glass of Bailey's.
There'll be no Pink Squirrel and not nearly as much Bailey's.

My biggest challenge will be developing a routine that accomplishes some needed tasks or chores around the house.
That will allow me to feel justified to play in the shop. I have a hard time playing when 'jobs' are hanging over my head.

Maybe I won't finish this Bailey's. Apparently my tastes have changed over time and such a sweet drink is a bit yucky.
So that ends that chapter. I'll go for a Stinking Hoppie now to begin this next new chapter.

No doubt you'll ask what the next project is. You'll know when I know. Too many choices at the moment.

Enjoy your retirement Zee  :whoohoo:

The important part is to keep yourself active - it doesn't matter if it's in the shop, helping others or even go back to work from time to time - as long as you're active and enjoying it, you will be the best you can be health wise

Best wishes

Welcome to the joy of retirement! First thing is just what you did. Find out you don't like the old drink.

Learn to enjoy each day to it's fullest and don't plan anything except the big events. Take each day as it comes and love those around you.

Zee--I wish you a happy and fulfilling retirement. May you find enough interesting things to keep your mind working, and the sheer pleasure of not having to get up and go to work every morning. I still love Baileys, and may ask to have a bottle buried with me when I go.---Brian

I couldn't be happier for you!
Enjoy your retirement, I'm sure you will.
I think your right - make some progress on some 'house project' every week so that you can have fun in your shop and not worry about it. Just a 'little' structure is what I think I'll need.  But as Tom said, everyone is different, and you'll find what works for you.

Someday, I'll join all you old codgers in the ranks of the retired.  But I've still got a few years to go yet...   :(

Well congratulations. Guess that’s what you meant with the “talk later”.   Just pour the Baileys in a cup of coffee in the morning; takes the edge off of too many “stinking hoppies” :lolb: :lolb:. I started my retirement calendar this year: only nine years and nine months to go   :facepalm2:. Guess I’ll just keep building up Amex points until then   >:D :lolb: :Jester:. Congratulations on your retirement Carl!  :cartwheel:

It takes a week or two to get past the feeling of just being on vacation ............ then the euphoria really sets in!

In regards to the projects around the house......here's a retirement story for you. My wife's brother-in-law was a tuneup mechanic. After he retired he noticed that he was "flat rating" all the little projects he was doing around the house. He said it "took him 2 years to master the fine art of puttering"!

Thank you all. This is very much appreciated.

Hang on it is Tuesday  :o You have been retired 4 days and did not tell us, you haven't been celebrating and drinking  “stinking hoppies" all this time and forgot to tell us  :hellno:

No no. It was Monday. Medical insurance stops at end of month.  ;D I had meant to retire two weeks ago but the company asked if I could hang on until the end of the month to get past a trade show. I resisted but they plied me with suggesting April 2nd because my medical insurance would continue to end of month. Not a bad deal. Two weeks pay and a month of medical insurance.

This was the order of things when I got home Monday:

1) Hugged T.
2) Announced I am now unemployed.
3) Got the Bailey's.
4) Posted on facebook for the family.
5) Posted on the forum. (See? Here you are.)
6) Threw away the Bailey's and made a stinking hoppie.
7) Supper (and a stinking hoppie)
7) Ruminated on the fact I'm unemployed (I mean retired).
8) Continued the stinking hoppies and ruminations.
9) Fell asleep.

Now I'm playing with the CAD.

Thanks again everyone. That was special.

Hi Zee.Congratulations on your retirement. Like most of us, I'm sure you'll soon be wondering how you found time to go to work. I thought that the following poem, written on my retirement, might amuse you. (for the benefit of our non-UK members, an OAP is an Old Age Pensioner!)

Growing old disgracefully is a dying art
But I'm going to have a real good try
And at least I've made a start
I've given up the day job
Which is really quite good news
Because it leaves me lots of time
For pushing into queues

When I'm waiting for a bus
I'll push my way on first
And if anyone should dare complain
I'll mutter and I'll curse
Then I'll keep them waiting while searching for my pass
And make those horrid school kids
Arrive late for their class
I hope they get detention, it'll serve the blighters right
For messing with an OAP, I'll teach them wrong from right!

And in the supermarket, I'll cause chaos at the till
By taking much too long to pack
Then questioning the bill
I'll keep the whole queue waiting
While I fiddle with my card
And if the other shoppers moan
I'll kick their trolley hard

And when I'm buying petrol
I'll fumble with the pump
And then when I am paying
I'll be a real old grump
I'll moan about the prices
And then I'll drop my key
And everyone will have to wait
'Cos I'm an OAP!

Ray

P.S. I'm not really like that!

By the way, what is a "stinking hoppie"? I even tried to google it and got a bunch of football stuff? In a former life I was a bartender & when someone asked for something I didn't know like a "fuzzy navel" I said if you can tell me how to make it, I can make it.

Thanks again everyone.

Ray...I enjoyed the poem. I expect to become a cranky old man (though some say I am already - cranky at least). I won't go looking for trouble...but I will certainly use it as an excuse.

Jo...working on pics. I've showed the shop before but there have been a few changes.

Art...a 'stinking hoppie' is a small jelly jar filled with crushed ice, a couple of tipsy onions (it's a brand), a teaspoon or two of the juice, and vodka.
It's my drink of choice. It's only found here at home.
Some time ago the family decided it needed a name.
'hoppie' is the name my grand-daughter gave me. It was supposed to be Poppie but she couldn't pronounce it at the time so 'hoppie' it is.
'stinking' was my two daughters' idea.
I would argue its aptness...but after 2 or 3 'stinking hoppies' it's probably appropriate.

Over time it won't be about the drink. I will BE 'stinking hoppie'.

P.S. Pay no attention to Chris. Rabbits?

P.P.S. The jelly jar is critical as it defines the volume and has indented sides making it easier to keep a grip on it.
I've not had to go to double-sided tape yet.

Pics of the current shop...

The shop is about 13x20. We had converted our garage to a master bedroom suite and added a new garage which allowed me to build a shop behind the new garage.
The bedroom suite is initially for our parents when they visit (or move in) and eventually for us when we don't want to deal with the stairs anymore.

1st pic is south-east corner. Mainly storage. You can see my metal supply below the window.
In the foreground is a roll-around drafting table. Behind that is a lab bench I won in a raffle at work. I do assembly or model work there.
I built the cart holding the air compressor and vacuum so I can move it around the shop.
I need a little sound-proofing on the compressor. In the meantime there's ear protection sitting there.
I'm hoping to develop a 'need' to put an air compressor in the garage and pipe it into the shop.
The cart was built on top of a harbor freight dolly I had.
I 3D printed the tool holders.

2nd pic is the south-west corner. The machines.
The picture came from my grand-mother's house. I had lived with her when I was 6.

3rd pic is my desk. The poster was a gift from the kids last year.
2nd lab bench also won at the raffle. I play with electronics there. Below the scope is a power supply.
To the left is a china cabinet my wife didn't want. So now it holds my memories, 'trophies', and learnings.
You can see some mugs and china from my grandparents in Germany. Bottom shelf has my German Alpine hat with pins from when I lived in Germany as a kid.
She also gave me that monstrous green chair but it's pretty comfortable.

Just outside the shop is the old kitchen sink and counter. Handy for washing parts (and me).

You can see there's quite a bit of Harbor Freight stuff. I like that store but I don't buy cutters or motorized things there.
The one wall color was T's idea. It's called "Inventor's Orange". So keep the Home Depot wise cracks to yourselves. :)

Yes...it's fairly clean right now. It will probably stay fairly clean but I expect (hope) for it to fill up over time.

Thanks for letting me 'show off' my shop. I'm going to have a lot of fun in there.

Thanks Bill.
I see your point about 'to work...to work'. But that's actually a quote from Professor Fate in "The Great Race". See poster in shop pictures.
I was 12 when that movie came out and it was influential. The cars (Leslie Special and Hannibal Twin 8), the plane, submarine, rocket, torpedo, blimp, etc.
When I get laid up sick in bed, I watch it.
Another quote from the movie is "Push the button, Max!" which was followed by some disaster.
There's several other quotes.
The music is excellent. Mancini. Particularly the "Pie in the Face Polka" and Professor Fate's theme during the plane scene.

"Those Magnificent Men and Their Flying Machines" was another. (Benny Hill was in that one as well as the guy who played Goldfinger.)

Well that was a little fun trip down memory lane. Thanks.

Sheesh. I may as well have continued working. "You've been designing for TWO days, where is the code!?  :slap:

:headscratch: I can't see either swarf or where there may be castings sets hidden in there  :noidea:

a) That's called cleaning up one's mess.  ;D But if you look closely enough there's some cast iron on the mill and some aluminum in the lathe.

b) Show YOU my castings?  :lolb:

If you look at the 2nd picture, by the window, you'll see the base for the PMR #7 Twin Cylinder. Does that count as a casting kit?
And for the eagle eyed members who've been bugging me, in the 1st picture on the far bench, you'll see the Monitor.

Well maybe you can't. Lost quite a bit of resolution when I resized the pics.

Pretty shop there Zee but are you actually going to do some work in there?

No. I'm going to play. And play and play and play. That way, all failures are learning experiences.  ;D
And I have many. No matter. It's play and I'm enjoying it.

Say it again with me Chris. STANLEY STEAMER (and repeat) :stir:

You and Chris need to go pound sand.  :lolb:

It's Chris that has to do the Stanley. All I'd be able to do is the Laurel.

Beautiful shop there, Zee!  Thanks for sharing your latest pictures with us.  Last I remember seeing it, there was stuff in it, but all a jumble.  It looks wonderfully organized now!

Do have fun!  And remember to share it with us too! :)

I think you should go out in the shop and make yourself some simple tchotchke to commemorate your retirement - something that you'll use often and, every time you fondle it, will bring back memories of the first days of your freedom.

A fancy brass and stainless stinking hoppy stirrer, fitted with a stirring spoon on one end and an onion fork on the other would be perfect and would only require a few hours of shop time.

While stirring with it, you could chant along with me...

No more staff meetings, EVER;  No more staff meetings, EVER; No more...
Regards, Marv

....and no Powerpoint engineering anymore.
Still two and a half year to wait for that point.

Sorry mate I am and have been pretty well out of circulation for a while now, (life keeps getting in the way).

Fantastic workshop and belated congratulations on your retirement.

Thanks guys.
I guess I'm not fully de-tox'd.
I got a model in the mail today from the Ukraine.
As a gift, in it was some candy and a 1 Hryvnia banknote (worth about 4 cents).
My first thought was to take it to work and show it to the fellows. (You'll recall I designed banknote acceptors.)
Silly on two counts. 1) "go back to work?  :slap: and 2) we have (rather, they have) a development group in Kiev along with a trial on one of the last products I worked on.

@Marv - tchotchkes are a great idea. (Yes, I had to look the word up.)

@Bob - how's the Beagle going?

I guess I will have the same things to go through in a month or so....thanks for all the heads up Zee  :whoohoo: After the last three weeks of advising, and the last couple of days of registration issues...there are a few things I definitely won't miss.

congratulations on the retirement and good luck for the future  :)

one day i hope i'll be fortunate enough to walk out of work and never go back. got 35 years to go till then!.

make sure you give yourself some goals, otherwise it's far too easy to just sit back and stop altogether.

above all else, enjoy yourself :)
one day ill finish a project before starting another!

This was my retirement plan - worked out OK so far

Contented man, A, adds diesel oil to fuel tank, B, which powers engine, C, thus driving generator D.  Generator D, powers fan, E, thus cooling contented man A, and by evaporative cooling keeps drink, F cool and refreshing.  This process should now continue indefinitely.

Cheers,

Phil (chemist, ret, 6/05)

Enjoy it!
