Schaublin/Hardinge electric feed
« on: March 30, 2018, 12:08:50 PM »
A Longbed Boxford Metric  AUD of unknown parentage is following me home.
My Diabas(Dolerite) source-mine on our churchyard has a suitable 200*200*1000mm stone of known swedish origin.

Bottom stone will be used as foundation for a new upper class lathe brand named Roxford.
Saves it from being chrused as road material.
Away with tinplate and underdrive gear.
Rear motor,a short piece of of powertwist belt and a chineese converter.
Backgearig removed as well.
The Norton box will be kept for screwcutting but I will try to make a continiously variable electric feed rate screw.
I think Schaublin and Hardinge has had sush systems for years.
What happens when Main spindle suddenly stops due to overload or worse?
Is there some kind of automatic cut out of feed?

No.....though I do believe there is a safety clutch...the drive motor on the Hardinge mounts to the apron., not the screw....

The apron clutch would keep tripping until you turned the power off.

I would guess there is a shared contactor for the power to the main two speed motor and the circuitry down at the tailstock to power the saddle motor.

Needless to say, although I've run one quite a bit...ive never crashed one...and doubt anything good is going to happen...
And I should have said    Saddle drive motor...

Thank You for answers.
I need a rev counter anyway and this must be possible to make it overrule the feed power.

Hej Niels

Congratulations with your "new" lathe.

On a CNC lathe the feed is derived from a rev. counter sensor on the main axel and a small microcontroller calculates how much / fast it should move / feed the other axis. This ensures that you can cut threads with precision and it will also stop the feed if the main shaft is stopped (after a very short delay of a few mS.).

There are a number of those more or less DIY controllers on the net made to be fitted to an old lathe.

Hej Niels

That looks like a nice system, that I might consider myself .... and no I do not have any other links as it is quite some time ago I thought about converting my lathe ....

Best wishes

Per
