New Project
« on: February 01, 2018, 10:55:12 PM »
Ok, I just watched the video that Rustkolector posted with his Nash power plant.
(That was inspiring to say the least!)
I'm looking for something to build next.  There is a two cylinder engine by Doug Kelley called the Bates & Edmonds.  I was wondering if there are plans for this engine?  If so, does anyone know where I can get them?

If not, is there another kit or plans that would be similar to one of these two engines?

I've been on the internet for awhile searching.  I see Doug Kelley is the the guy that has drawings for both these engines.  So maybe we just have to wait and he will offer the plans someday.  When I get back home to Dad's, I will get his Home Shop Machinist magazines and look at the other Doug Kelley models (IHC Titan, and Bruce Macbeth)

If you guys have ideas for similar engines with vertical cylinders?? Can you post in a reply?
thanks

Dennis, knowing Doug if he has any plans to offer the drawings it will most likely be through Village Press (Home Shop Machinist publisher). If not serialized in the magazine, it could be offered as one of their chapbooks. I will see if I can get in touch with him and ask if there are any plans in the works for either of these two engines.

Thanks Bill,  I sent Rustkolector a PM. He said the Nash plans will probably be available someday.  I haven't heard if the Bates & Edmonds are available yet.  I'm going to take a look at the IHC Titan this weekend.  I  don't have much left on the Coventry, but I don't have as much time anymore, so I slowed down a bit.

Frisco Standard would be a similar looking engine which you can get castings and drawing for

http://www.shelfpetmodels.com/home/frisco-standard/

Or this one quite takes my fancy but may be expensive getting it to the US

Thanks Jason!  That's good info.  I have never seen that site before with the shelf models.

I've been looking at the Frisco Standard model that Jason posted yesterday.  One of these models has spark plugs and the other has igniter.
What are the pros and cons for the igniter?  Its pretty cool looking at the mechanics tripping while its running, but it looks like more work?

Ignitors are harder to make and a bit more tempramental to get going but are correct for many engines and look right. A number of model manufacturers do a spark plug version for simplicity and speed of build.

As well as making the actual ignitor with it's small parts there are the trips and linkages to do and the cam profiles are a lot lore complicated too but satisfying when you get them all done and the engine runs.

One option is to machine the hole in the cylinder for an ignitor then make an adapter for a spark plug so you can get the engine up and running like that and once you know everything else is OK swap the plug for the ignitor.
