Goods Wagons for gauge1
« on: January 25, 2018, 06:26:55 PM »
I’m doing a series of 6 goods wagons for gauge 1, (1/32 scale, 45 mm track).
the little 4 wheeled open top (gondola ?) type of wagon,  for having something to pull by my live steam locos at the club track…

A row of 6 wagons seem a few when pulled by a loco, but is a lot of parts to make in the workshop !

The 6 frames are now almost complete, I have to start with the wagon casing...

All these little parts were machined with the plain lathe and mill...

No way to insert the text between the corresponding attached pictures, it seems…

Now the parts:
The U channels for the side sills were cut from a small 10 mm square steel tube from the nearest DIY store, sliced in 2, and carefully straightened as being heavily bent upon the cut.
The other frame parts were machined from 2x10mm flat steel profile from the same source.

Riveting :
A specially made supports which holds the pieces tightly together and drilled with the pattern of holes allows all the drilling to be precisely and rapidly done.
Riveting was done with 1mm copper rivets and with a home shop made rivets squeezer for these round headed tiny rivets

The frame were assembled by soft soldering the side profiles and the front and rear spacer with a small piece of brass angle, followed again by riveting.

Very nice start on the wagons! You are going to shame me into replacing the plastic ones behind my loco...  :-[

episode 2

Axle boxes : parted off from a machined brass 12 mm square, then milled and drilled for the axle.  They hold on their slides by small keepers and M1.4 screws, yes, that small!…

Buffers were turned also with a form tool, from a 12 mm aluminium round bar, a small shop made collet allows the finishing and tapping of their base.
couplings
for the train couplings, I made a blank with a steel round bar silver brazed to a flat piece of the same metal, slices were cut to provide the hooks, finished with files and dremel.

Plastic wagons, some are very well made, lots of details, good rolling too, but...pretty expensive, and not made in the home shop !!
I'm sure I cannot get such level of realism, its not my goal anyway, wagons have to be assorted with my home made live steamed locos...

Where did you get the plans for these wagons?

the plans of these frames are my own, but you may have it if you wish...
they were drawn mainly for myself, I'm amateur draughtsman...

episode 3

wheels:
After scraping the bottoms of drawers for some good sized wheels, 12 were found, not bad but 12 remained to be turned…a good opportunity to make and use a form tool, one of my favourite with the lathe.

Leaf spring suspension were impossible to make, in my hands !
I will install dummy cast leaf springs and holders.

The actual suspension is just a piece of 0.8mm piano wire bent at right angle, with an extremity in a small hole in the axlebox pushing the axlebox downward, the other end pass trough a little hole in a frame spacer and held with a small screw, this simple setup functions quite well and I am very happy with this find in fact…

This concludes the machining of these frames, which tested on rails at my club behind my little 030T give full satisfaction to their happy manufacturer, the rolling is good and the noise on the track is super...

It remains for me to provide casing for these wagons, 6 casings, similar or different, open or closed, I do not know yet,
I'm waiting for inspiration…looking at these wrecked gondola from the steam era…

Very nice! I'm still looking for metal tender for my Cheddar Iver and goods wagons will be required later on. Nice job on yours :)

Very nice work! I like that you've riveted it all together. And the suspension is great!!

Thanks for the appreciations !

at first, for riveting I tested a modified adjustable pliers, but it requires two hands to squeeze a small 1mm dia rivet ! usable only for a small batch of rivet, I’m not hefty enough !

so I made a rivet squeezer copied from classical designs, and indeed much more easy and fast to use !  the plan I did for the odds and ends found in my shop is here :

I do not succeeded with a mechanical solution for the leaf springs for my wagons, too many tiny parts to hold and machine!

So I simply did dummy springs moulded in silicone and cast with low melting metal; I’m not aware of other way of making such tiny parts.

The fineness of moulding is good.  The result corresponds to what I was expecting: these springs look as they are, i.e. purely “cosmetic” !

I’m not so happy with the result, they doesn’t fit well with my "all mechanical" frames, but I don’t have no other solution for making these parts, I  hope that a layer of paint would improve the general aspect, maybe!

The low melting metal used was an alloy of lead recycled from old movable types (lead/tin/antimony), it remains very brittle in the thin parts, no flexibility at all.

Those look pretty good to me. a little paint and I don't think anyone will know they are dummy springs.

They look great to me, making working ones that tiny would be very difficult.
