Ice Cream Machine
« on: January 16, 2018, 09:54:39 AM »
Hello,

I have seen these old ice cream machines.
They are powered by a hand crank or a hit and miss engine.

Has anyone ever built such an ice maker itself?

I would be interested in such a model.
Unfortunately, the commercially available models are all too expensive, too big or not available anymore.

I saw them making ice cream for the stand at the Coolspring show with a few of those, made a great exhibit and tasty ice cream.

I made a set of rubber molds from a small ice cream freezer and had 6 set of castings made. I sold 5 of them at shows, then sold the molds to a fellow that I think follows this list. I will not identify him, since I dont know what he plans to do with the molds.

The plan was to hook it up to a model hit and miss engine, but my friend that had the engine died and I lost interest in the project.

Hello,

very interesting.
Are there pictures of the models?
What size did the models have?
I would be very interested.

I found a 1 qt ice cream maker. It was the last one that was still available. Let's see what can be made of it.

I wanted to take the pulleys in 7 "or 8" from Dial.
http://www.powercoolpumps.com/8-x-5-8-Zinc-Blower-Pulley-Dial-P-N-6311-6311.htm
They look like the Contry Freezer model.
Unfortunately, shipping to Germany costs  220$  :o. I can not understand.

I would also be interested in a 4 QT White Mountain Freezer.
Unfortunately shipping from the US is too expensive, but it would be something for my wife.

Toby, it would be worth contacting the supplier of that pully to get another shipping price from them. I have found on a couple of occasions that US websites automatically work out a very expensive shipping cost but have managed to get the parts at 1/10th the cost and they come within a week.

Hello,

here are the beginnings of my drawings.

I took a 25QT White Mountain "Samson" Freezer and scaled it 1/3.

The tub has a height of ~200mm, diameter down ~170mm, top ~180mm.
The pulleys are ~200mm x 35mm.

Regards Toby

Hello,

yesterday I got my 1 quart Ice Cream Freezer.
I had to pick up the parcel at customs.
The size is as expected, and corresponds to a 20 quart freezer in 1/3 scale.
Of course we had to test the device yesterday - delicious!

Next, I will order the pulleys and build the chassis.

Later, I will also rebuild the freezer.
I just want to use the gears, dasher and can with pivot pin.

Toby

Are those wooden dasher blades?  Hmmm.  Be thorough in cleaning between batches.

I've cranked quite a few batches of ice cream in one of those when I was a kid. LOL
