Coventry by Roy Ozouf
« on: January 10, 2018, 02:37:55 AM »
Hi all,
I have been snooping around on and off for awhile now.  I have a Dad that has built quite a few steam engines, shows them at various shows.  I have  helped him build quite a few parts for them. I decided to build one for myself.  I watched a VCR tape with the old man awhile ago, and saw an interesting Steam Engine that Oscillates with a slide valve.  I know a couple of you guys have built this engine already and documented it on this forum.  They did a better job than I can with pictures and steps they took.  (sshire and kvom).  I am going to post a few pictures that I took.   I am trying to post a picture of the original engine I saw on the VCR tape at a NAMES show.  Hope it works.

Ok, so I'll try to post a few pictures of what I have done so far.
First, I decided it was too small, so I am scaling it up 50%
Here is the first part I completed.  It is a little bigger than I thought it would be, but I have these parts made already so this is the size.
On the third picture, I zoomed in to a flat head screw.  These frames had to be .75 thick, and I had 4 pieces of 3/8 6061 Aluminum, so I bolted them together in four places.

Here is the bearing caps and then the caps bolted to the frames and bored the crank hole and the pivot hole.  I screwed up on the distance between them, so I had to bore the cap .100" past the center line.  you can tell there is more hole in the cap vs the frame.  I messed up a number in ACad but its all good ;D ;D

I have an MX2 controller on a Bridgeport.  Its nice to profile without a rotary table.
Here is an example of what I do to get my points.  I draw it in ACad and then write down the points.

I'm thinking about the flywheel.  What do you guys think?  I can buy one from Martin's, or I can build one out of cast iron.
I can buy a chunk of cast iron from McMaster Carr for around $50 or buy a casting for around $50.  Same price.
What looks better???
