Another Hobbiest
« on: January 04, 2018, 10:57:57 PM »
Hello to all that participate in this forum.
I am a rather "old noob".
Retired from the electronics and computer industry.

I have built one Gerry's Beam Engine and a lot of shop tools.
Seems like I make more tools than anything else.

Cheers to all;
JR

Wow, what a welcome...

Thanks guys, seems like I just can't get enough of this hobby.
The first machine that I made was my CNC machine. I actually just wanted to make some
model airplane parts and in the process started this "new" hobby. After I used the CNC a bit
I thought it would be nice to have a mini lathe. That is what turned me to machine shop work.

And yes, I certainly do know Marv. I have made quite a few of his projects and have all
of his shareware in my PC. And about that Avatar, I thought that was Albert!

Happy Machining;

I was referring to recognizing it from Homemadetools.com.  When I needed an avatar that picture immediately sprang to mind.

Yes, it is Albert.  Albert was a German physicist.  I'm a physicist of German extraction.  Albert, as witnessed by that picture, had a sardonic sense of humor.  I have a sardonic sense of humor.

Some quotes of his, that capture my thoughts perfectly...

It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.

Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

Science is a wonderful thing if one does not have to earn one's living at it.

It is a miracle that curiosity survives formal education.

Two things are infinite:  the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe.

The most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible.

You do not really understand something unless you can explain it to your grandmother.

Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.

If only I had known, I would have become a watchmaker.

If I had my life to live over again, I'd be a plumber.

It is not known with what weapon World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

Welcome aboard JR. Great bunch of old farts here. I also know Marv; great guy, super intelligent, but very unforgiving. I’ve built a few of his tools and used many of his hints. I sometimes wonder what an offspring of Marv and Twain would have resulted in  :old: :shrug: :facepalm:. Sorry for the triple emojis Marv  :lolb:

Actually I knew it was Albert! I have also used many of Marv's ideas and various parts of builds for my own tools.
I always smile when I see his Avatar. Reminds me of the value of science.
I don't think a lot of people know how much of the technology we use in our daily life came from the space program and NASA.

Thanks for posting the quotes from Mr. Einstein Marv.

I never read much from Mr. Einstein and I am sure glad he was not a plumber!

Cheers, JR
