It's used to facilitate making relative measurements of the parallel-ness of machine ways. Thusly:

Kingway does sound better than the Parallelisitynessometer. Better, but not as catchy.

First day in the new year, and I've already learned something new, really takes the pressure off the year!

Now you can take the rest of the week off.... :lolb: :mischief:

I've got the bottom for the wood box in the mill now. I like tools to have boxes.  :old:

Happy new year!

I would love to see it being used in anger!   Make sure you take us along Pete.   8)

Pete,

Do you have a solution/design for mounting the vials? I am also at the early stages in making a kingway.

Thanks,
Steve

I have no levels on the device. They just add to the clutter and weight. I don't care if the thing is level. I know Richard King has shown level vials on the device, as have others, but I prefer to do any level checking separately.

I hadn't thought about a 'build log', Dave, but that wouldn't be a bad idea. Not building the device but maybe a bit on using it in anger! It might be a couple of months though...

Pete,

The vials are to measure twist and how much out of "parallel " the ways that the ball and 2 point foot are resting on as you traverse the tool along the ways. I.e. they measure the relative position of the way. They wont' measure necessarily if the 2 ways are "level". You would need to calibrate it in absolute terms for that.

Yes, that's right, Steve. But I'm not surveying a machine, I'm straightening it. The open flats are done first with the master flat then the dovetails. So any defect in the plane of the flats is gone by the time I need the Kingway to look at the dovetails.
Vials can be added at any time. Maybe the next owner...

Pete,

Fair enough. It would be interesting to see pictures of the castings. Please do post about the work if you don't mind.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve, look at the second picture of this thread. While that's not my Benchmaster, it's the same and shows the Kingway being used to measure the column dove tail.

Pete,

Yes ok. The only casting ways I have like that on my bridgeport rebuild project are the back of the knee and underside of the saddle. For the other areas the vials will come in very handy. I used a real kingway to get the twist out of the bottom side of the table just using the vials. Very handy and quick; 15mins in total, and easy to do the measuring, although I spent 3 days solid doing the scraping.

This thread has reminded me I need to crack on with building my kingway. I am a fair few hours behind you. I have still to do the knuckles, the vial mounts, and the circular disc "foot" to go underneath the ball, but at least I have dug out the box of parts!

Thanks,
Steve

Steve, post some pics of your Kingway, please. And your Bridgeport! I'd love to see what's up doing.

looks good Pete.

On the level thing, you may not need that function for a mill and as you point out things can be easily added to the beam structure.

Just for the benefit of the un-initiated trying to puzzle out how it assists with reconditioning, in other situations, that level function is crucial for scraping for alignment.  For example a lathe bed.  With two surfaces of the long V done, using the level is the only way I know to get the corresponding horizontal surface parallel to the V.  With my rendition of the device, I built things that clamp on to the beams so you can place a Starrett 199 level (the accuracy needed for alignment scraping) - you get the function, its not in the way when you don't need it and you don't have to buy more stuff

Here you go Pete:

I had to resize it so it wasn't too large to post.
