Carbide Burrs
« on: December 29, 2017, 11:52:11 AM »
Carbide burrs, similar to this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-Piece-Tungsten-Carbide-Burr-Set-8mm-head-6mm-shank-5-8/282071046528?hash=item41acbe9980:g:MUQAAOSwEK9TrpXv

Can these be used on a milling machine to chomp away at ( probably 6082T6 ) aluminium alloy ?

I suspect, as they have several cutting edges, they would clog up in fairly short order.

No coolant flood available, just WD40 squirter can.

:o They are expensive  :paranoia:. I pay much less than that for them from China on fleabay ;D

Yes, they can be used but likely to get clogged so WD40 or white spirit will be needed.  ;)

Cheers Jo.

Used a HSS ball-ended cutter to put some shallow grooves in a bit of ally plate for Clive but the bottom of the grooves were a bit torn where the cutter edges overlap.  :(
Cleaned 'em up with a piece of emery glued to a length of dowel, he's OK with them but it's tiresome chore I don't need. Wondered if carbide burrs would be sharper ? Maybe not.  :headscratch:
Couldn't get your link to work but found some anyway @ about £6-ish. Will have a nibble ....  :)

Hi Dave

There are coarser burrs available in case you don't already have them. They are especially made for softer materials with the tendency to clogging up cutters.

Cheers Florian
ps: A router bit can be a cheap alternative for radius cutting!

Florian:

I do have some burrs somewhere, and some router bits. Trouble is, having re-jigged my shop I've no idea where  :headscratch:.
Looking can wait. Too damn cold. Rummaging Mojo doesn't get to flying speed at temps. lower than 15oC.

Jo:

Ordered a set of the ones you indicated, will have to look at Jenny's offerings later.

( PS  ... Knew it was a bad idea for Moz to go to N. Yorks.  Crashed her car in the snow.  Slid into a stone wall. :(   She is unscathed, car is probably a write off, only worth about 2k )
