How about a Rupnow Vertical Engine
« on: December 10, 2017, 04:55:21 PM »
I guess engine number three is going to be the Rupnow Vertical.
Looking through my inventory, I didn't have all the materials needed to build this engine. So, I placed my order with Hobby Metal Kits, in Wisconsin. In the mean time I got started with materials I did have.

First was downloading & printing the plans. Thanks Brian for all your work drawing & making the plans available

I had material to make the cylinder head. Brian mentioned this would probably be the hardest part of the build, I thought this would be a good place to start.

Next was the Cylinder mounting plate.

Connecting rod roughed out with the bandsaw.

The 11/32 reamer needed to finish the valve cage bores arrived. So, making the cages & valves were next.

After lapping the valves, grinding the e-clip grooves, parting them from the "handle" & making the retainers was complete.

The cylinder head with rocker arm tower, rocker arm & valves installed is complete. The pin holding the rocker arm will be trimmed to the correct length.

The material for the Cylinder & Frame arrived from Hobby Metals.
Here the cylinder is rough drilled & fins have been cut.

After boring the cylinder, the final measurement came out perfect!

And this is as far as I am....The cylinder has been honed but not polished. In the background is the piston, a few tenths oversize & counter bored. waiting to final fit before parting off. That block of aluminum under the cylinder will become the frame of the engine.

For my other engines I bought gears. I haven't made gears since Vo-Tech....back in High School, which was many, many years ago! I ordered the cutters, have the blanks turned & have been "studying-up"

Thanks for taking a look,

Jack

Balancing can be made different.

Thanks for the comments guys...Brian, I'm from South East South Dakota.

Started on the frame. 1" holes drilled for the 1/2" radius. Located, drilled for camshaft & crankshaft. Also bored for crankshaft bearing. I drilled then reamed a .375 hole so when I flip the frame over I'll be able to indicate & bore in the correct location. After that operation is complete I'll drill to finish size as indicated on the plans.

I discovered my indicating plates are not the correct ones for my table! :o

The plates have 4 mounting holes & the table has 3!

So, I'll have to wait for the correct plates to arrive before the gear cutting gets underway. There's plenty else to keep me busy.

Thanks again,

Jack

A little more progress. The frame is complete with the exception of a little clean-up. Boring one side then flipping the part over,  indicating then boring came out nice,  the bearings for the crank are installed & the crank turns nice & smooth.

The correct dividing plates arrived! I'll probably be attempting to cut the gears this weekend.

Things seem to be going smoothly Jack. I hope the gears will go just as well for you.

Another update on the Rupnow.

The gear cutting went well.

I broached a 1/8" keyway in the flywheel

And here it is, a few minutes before the first attempt of it running.

Here it is running. I think it's going to be a pretty good runner after some tweaking. I'm have a difficult time keeping the flywheel tight. I'm using a 6-32 set screw tightened down on the 1/8" key. The clunking you hear is the flywheel. I'm not sure what the best method of remedy will be. I've thought of cross drilling the crankshaft & putting a 3/32" pin in. I could then draw the flywheel up tight against it.
Hope you enjoy & thanks for taking a look.

Congratulations Sleddog. I'm getting a big blanks spot on my screen, not a video. I'm glad the engine runs well for you.---Brian

Congratulations Sleddog,

That runs very well and I think Brian's design is nice looking.

I really like the nice, regular beat as it runs.

Thank You for posting,

Congratulations jack  :whoohoo:. I am sure you will get the flywheel sorted out and locked down. But it sure is running nicely.

It's been extremely cold here as it has been across the country. Even in my heated shop it's been too cold to work. Today I finished the fuel tank & mount. Ran it a few more times & have declared it finished.

Here is the finished video.

Very nice Jack. Well done!!!---I see you are using the same hi-tech throttle return spring as I did before I found a tension spring the correct size.---Brian
