Inductive Timing Light works on S/S ignition
« on: December 08, 2017, 03:17:47 AM »
I'm sure others have done this, but tonight I tried my automotive timing light on my S/S ignition and it worked perfectly.  My light has a knob for checking the advance on distributors.

By setting the light to 5 degrees advanced the timing mark will move 5 degrees from the pointer.  Then I can set the timing on Tiny 5 degrees advanced by moving the magnet  relative to the crank until the timing mark lines back up with the pointer.

Bob,
Does this mean that we have the same Craftsman timing light? I got mine to set the timing on my 140 series Volvo. Haven't used it since I got a modern car. :-[ I'll have to try that on Val.

Hi Bob,
I too have a very nice Craftsman light from many years back. I had often thought about using it but couldn't figure out how to use the pickup clamp around the small wires. What's your technique?

George, I just put the inductive clamp around the plug wire that came from S/S and it was able to pickup the current when it fired.  The plug wire  probably takes up less  than a 10th of the area of the notch in the pickup.  I powered the timing light off of my battery charger.  I'll take pictures tonight and post them.

I was able to snap these before heading out for the school bus and work.
