Old Toolbox Find
« on: October 01, 2012, 12:38:57 PM »
A former co-worker (recently retired) found a Kennedy 11 drawer machinist chest on e-bay and bought it and its contents for a song.  He took out what he wanted and brought the chest and remainder of its contents to the school to be picked through to see what we could use here.  In going through the various drawers I found the following... a 4" and 6" Starrett combination square, each with centering head and in like new condition. and a pair of machinist's clamps  (also Starrett), one of which only needs a circlip keeper.  Honestly I didn't even realize that Starrett made combination squares in these smaller sizes but they surely found a new home in my toolblx now :)

Good to know Jo!!  These are of a size far better suited to model work that the typical 12" ones I think. I suspect I will use them fairly often as well.

I also have a 2" adjustable square. When I say adjustable, like with these combination sets, you can adjust how much of the length of the 'square' sticks out from the handle. It can be really useful in tight corners.

Just checked my tools both are by L.S.S.Co rather than Starrett. I got the sizes wrong: :slap:  the adjustable square is 2 1/2" and the set 4".

I also have a sweet little 1" square ;D

Jo,  so who would L.S.S. Co. be if not an abbreviation for the L.S. Starrett Co.?  Perhaps on those small squares they didn't have room to spell it all out.
