Video - 2 rather nice SW Van Horn engines.
« on: November 25, 2017, 12:55:59 AM »
I stumbled across this video by accident and thought as the engines are a bit unusual it may be of interest.

I've never heard of SW Van Horn but they seem to be attractive engines - I bet the first one would sound great on steam  :)

That's a nice running engine. I always wonder just how these sorts of engine designs come about. Were they developed in isolation or developed to improve on some existing design or what?  Maybe there was just a lot of "re-inventing the wheel" going on during that era.

Yes Gil is more of a collector than maker but he does restore engines that have had a hard life. He tends to post over on Smokstak forum.

A lot of these "different" designs came about to try an bypass patents that the well know makers took out which tended to restrict competition.

One case of that I recall was the planetary gear someone used to connect the flywheel to the crankshaft on an early beam engine, since Watt or someone had the patent on a flywheel on the end of a crankshaft!
