Hi Zee - I think you are referring to the difference between the round and the rectangular? where as I was referring to two different round inserts - plain and TiN Coated.

I've not been a carbide user at home so these are new to me (in the home workshop) and it's a good eighteen years or so since I last used anything like it so - 'laymans' description

The round 'tips' give a much better surface finish but with with a much less depth of cut than can be taken with the rectangular type. The finish off the rectangular, whilst acceptable enough is not comparable to that off the round.

Basically then - rectangular for metal removal,  round for good surface finish

If it's the difference between the plain and coated - the coated will usually last longer or can be driven a bit harder than the plain

Thanks Tug. That's exactly what I was asking for.

Bit of an update on this one.

Clocked the arbor and found that OK, but the head was a loose fit on the 22mm dia which gave about 0.1mm TIR, then tapped it true to about 0.02tir.

I did another test using the Bangood inserts 1.0mm DOC, 45mm wide piece of cast iron as before and 3 feed rates of approx 200mm/min, 100mm/min and a handfed 50mm/min. as you will see the mill cut out on the two faster feeds and I could only get it to cut by handfeeding which still gave a poor finish.

I then bought some decent tips and it made all the difference, grey PVD coated at the top by Korloy for steel, stainless, exorics and CI and Polished for Ali and non ferrous at the bottom by YG-1. Cuts are the same bit of CI, 32mm wide steel and 45mm wide 6082. 100mm /min feed on teh CI and steel 150mm/min on ali.
