What kind of fuel for a (future) tiny 4 stroke engine ?
« on: November 05, 2017, 03:15:12 PM »
Hi everybody,

I'm studying my first IC engine. I chose a one cylinder 4 stroke engine.
Bore will be 14mm. Stroke will be 12mm. A very small thing but that's what my workshop is for.

Ring should be a Viton seal. I've read this solution works.
Piston is aluminum and sleeve is iron cast.

My question is : what kind of fuel should i use to make it run ?
Must i add any oil to ensure a good sliding wet ring ?

Thank you

Hagar, over here in the States, many folks use Coleman fuel with something like 2% oil (I prefer Marvel Mystery Oil). I am sure some of our UK and European members can point you to the equivalents in your area.

I have just purchased a litre of Coleman equivalent fuel made for Primus, the camping stove people. You should be able to find it at most camping or outdoor equipment shops. Expect to pay about £8 per litre. The advantage over petrol is that there is a lot less smell.
Alternatively, you could use either butane or propane with a suitable regulator.

Coleman fuel seems to be a good refined gasoline. This trade is not available, here in France. :'(
I think a high quality fuel for house stove should be very close to Coleman fuel. It's easy to find...

So, 2% is the rate for oil added. A 2 stroke engine oil of course.

Thank you for your answers.
