Hardened Steel Rods
« on: October 21, 2017, 06:49:46 PM »
More information that I'm sure many of you already know... I have some 8mm and some 10mm hardened steel rods that I had bought some time for for another project.  I learned that they are only hardened on the outside, the inside is still relatively soft.  So, if you need some hardened rollers, like for a file rest, etc, this rod lends itself pretty well to that kind of application.  You can cut off the right length with an angle grinder, face off the ends in the lathe with a carbide tool bit, then drill a hole through the center with a regular drill bit.  I've even threaded internal holes in the rod with regular, high speed steel taps.

So many projects, so little time...
