Hello from Darlington
« on: October 14, 2017, 01:18:06 PM »
Hello there,

I thought I would join up to hopefully pick up and use some tips on building steam engines. At the moment I'm planning on making a small occilator engine and boiler as a first project.

My setup is simply an old early type Myford ML4. Haven't got a date for exact manufacture of the lathe, as I have been informed by the current owners of myford that the early documentation was distroyed.

Anyhow I love steam engines, some of you may know me from other forums too. Eventually I'd like to build some bigger engines but that's a few years away yet as setup and funds just won't allow it. Had my first play on a large steam engine, a 4" foster that belongs to a friend of mine The other weekend, and the large steam bug has bitten.

Currently I've made a start on the small occilator, got the piston, connecting rod, big end, (all one piece) cylinder, end cap, and port face done. Just need to move on to some other bits too, like the flywheel and engine frame. This was a first project made from bits of donated scrap.

Anyhow look forward to getting to know you all and hopefully learning a few tricks. (Like learning how to post pics??? I have a flickr account will that work??)

I invite you to have a look around my small shed and lathe set up.

Hi Jim thanks for the welcome, I'll get on with a thread on a little occilator that im building from bits of scrap i have. Not working to plans, this is purely to learn the processes involved in turning drilling operations. It should make a nice starter project. It's been made up as I go along, though roughly following a Bowman design. Let's see what it turns out like.

Hi Roger, I've got a few Mamods, stationaries and mobiles, a roller and traction engine were been modified when I got side tracked with the lathe. Ive got a couple of KMV engines, got one Bing engine, and gave another away after I'd restored it, to working condition. Also recently acquired the Bowman, which again isn't as original but it runs nice, and very powerful.

I just thought I'd prefer to build them than restore them, hence the purchase of the lathe.

Here's the Bing that was restored and became a give away

And the other two mobiles getting a custom treatment.
