Travis Steam Engine No.5
« on: October 05, 2017, 04:43:20 PM »
Hello everyone,

I have now completed the drawings for another original design steam engine. This will be labeled "Travis Steam Engine No.5".

My design criteria is based on a circa 1800 to 1900 single cylinder steam engine and add modern modifications to improve the overall performance. I also wanted an engine that could be built from bar stock material and eliminate the need for castings.

The engine specifications are:

Style: Steam Engine, single cylinder-double-acting
Number of cylinders: one, aluminum with brass insert liners
Bore: 1.25-inch
Stroke: .875 - inch
Piston: Aluminum, with two plates and one Teflon sealing ring
Piston Rod: 3/16" Brass round rod
Connecting Rod: Brass, machined from flat bar
Crankshaft: Brass, machined from round bar and mounted on s/s ball bearings
Valves: One vertical machined from 1/4" brass round rod, triple opening, spring loaded.
Valve Chamber: Brass, vertical, single 1/4" bore, machined from flat bar
Cam: One, eccentric lobe, brass, mounted on crankshaft, adjustable timing
Head - Top: Aluminum, machined from round bar
Head - Bottom: Aluminum, machined from round bar and houses stuffing box for the piston rod
Bottom Plate: Aluminum, machined from flat bar
End Plates and Base: Aluminum flat bar, machined to shape
Flywheel: Cast brass modified with a longer center hub
Steam and Exhaust plumbing: 1/4" brass pipe and fittings
Hardware: stainless

I have almost completed the engine and will add more photos later.

Hello everybody,

I am attaching just one photo of the brass Valve with the "Roller Ball" installed. This is the original Valve that I made but have since made some modifications by eliminating the S/S ball. I have changed to a hinged lever for the Valve to ride on similar to a rocker arm and do not need the ball any longer. I have uploaded to my Youtube channel a video showing how the original valve was made.

Have a great day,

Thomas

Hello again,

Got all the completed parts put together and made a test run to confirm that the Valve System was going to work and it appears to be OK.

Lookin' good Thomas!

Thank you Bent, I sure am happy that the valve system worked. That .0925 elongation of the hole openings in the Valve Chamber had me worried. The timing is super sensitive, unlike any other engine that I have built.

Have a great day,
Thomas

Hey everyone,

Getting real close to a steam up now. Attaching two photos and a video of the aluminum Side Plates and a trial fit of the completed parts.

Hey everybody,

OK, got the engine assembled and made a first test run on air and very pleased that it runs really well. During the build I made quite a few changes to my original design but am happy with the final engine and the overall look. The timing was a bit hard to establish that sweet spot, but once I zeroed in on it, all worked just fine.

Have a great day,
Thomas

Hi Bill and thank you,

I have modified the Valve by removing the roller ball and added a "lever" that acts kind of like a rocker arm to lift the valve. This new system works much better and I have adjusted the timing a bit more and the engine runs much smoother.

Have a great day,
Thomas

Nice!  Almost as much fun to hear the glee in your voice as to watch the motor get built and run.  Keep on steamin' Thomas!

Hey Bent,

It is always nice to have an engine actually run and all the work.

Thanks,

Short video of the new modified Valve System. Cam follower mounted on the side plate acting like a rocker arm and eliminating all the side load on the Valve. Runs much smoother with a bit more fine tuning of the eCam.

Hello everyone,

Now have the Cat Head, Steam In plumbing, Blow Bye tube and a Counterweight installed. Now I need to get it on steam and see if it will work.

Later,
