Midlands Show 2017
« on: October 02, 2017, 11:35:03 AM »
The Midlands Show is not long away now. I am planning to be Chauffer driven to the show on the Thursday 19th so I can collect a set of castings    :cartwheel:

Is anyone else thinking of going?

Jo

P.S. I have been required to attend the show by my w**k as part of my recovery programme to build up my stamina for doing long journeys  :naughty:

P.P.S Surus says he is coming  :pinkelephant:

Sounds like we have Mike Coles joining us as well on Thursday :D Any one who wants to talk Anzani's, Gnomes  or Scorpions he's your man  ;)

I was thinking we all could get together for coffee/Teas in the canteen area about 11:30 for a chin wagg  8)

Some of us will be there early in the morning as there is to be the traditional transferring 'desirable items' between cars in the car park from about 9am :-X

Hopefully want to get into the Silver Soldering session at 12.

Also planning to go on Sunday but via the Watch and Clock Fair at the National Motorcycle Museum.  Hoping to find some bits for the Aciera.

I had planned to arrive for 9 and left home at 7:25.  Plenty of time for 50 miles or so I thought.  One accident o A446  and another on M42 and everyone detouring the same direction as me.  Finally arrived at 9:45.  Not much of a queue to get in initially but very rapidly the show filled up and became very busy.

Highlight from my point of view was seeing a very nice completed Anzani 'Y' type engine on the Wolverhampton MES stand.  Took a good few pictures to try and help me with the one I am attempting to build.  The builder had taken 1 year from start to finish, my aim is somewhere around 1 decade I think.

Managed to buy some material stock for the engine and invested in a Dial co-axial Centering Alignment Indicator Metric.  A guy stood next to me wanted one, I though it a good idea and suggested we might a bit knocked of the price if one of us bought the two. It worked, saved £5 each.

Paying another visit on Sunday, hopefully a better journey.

:embarassed: ok so my Apple Crumble biscuits were all "sold out" over the day but as no one was really hungry I was forced to take the Thornton's Sticky Wotsits home with me  Thanks Dave  ;D

Surus met a few new friends and was fairly well behaved as we had given him a set of Bugl 2.5cc team race Diesel castings to fondle in his hide away as well as the apple Crumble thingies  ;). Chaos was narrowly averted when we convinced him that he needed to sit and guard the two Robinson X type casting sets in the back of the Disco while we returned to the hall and the Bugler was sold on to Jan  :wallbang: Jan is a nice guy so yes, yes I know he will do a good job of them  :)

I have photos of some of the models but it will take me time as I need to do a bit of recovery first :disappointed:. Thanks guys for joining us a lovely day. Shame about the show decreasing in size

Jo

P.S. I have been told there is another Bugl 2.5cc casting set  :-X

Jo,

Glad you had a good day at the show,  Now you mention It there did seem to be less stuff around both, I think less models on display.  But it felt very busy and crowded.

What does a Bugler engine look like?  Google has not found one.

Hey Chipswitheverything,
Thanks for all the photos. The bunch seem to be a Sherman tank. But there was that one #170 that was a double overhead cam V8, any more info on that? I have to admit the "Thornton's Sticky Wotsits" really had me till I did a search and found they were Cheetos. :lolb:  Wonderful thing the internet, and I didn't have to call my sister in law. :)

There was also a nice Clarkson compound someone had started.

A Sheldon vertical Compound

and someone had made up an Anzani from some of Mike castings. Mike was pleased to see it there the guy who built it only brought the castings within the last 12 months  8)

A big triple someone had made.

and I still must make myself one of these little oscillators, they are too cute   ;D

I'd forgotten just how huge the Stuart 6A is  :o

I keep looking and wanting a Williamson  :embarassed:

They had a high speed Sirius there.

And their Stuart No 1 with reversing gear one it. Still not sure about the reversing gear  :noidea: And Eric can be seen in the background giving me the evil eye making sure I did not buy anything from Stuarts  :ShakeHead:

And of course there is the X type casting sets but you will have to wait to see those, I have to find them under Graham's special protective coating  :lolb:

I visited on Thursday also, many less models on display but thankfully plenty of traders. Completed my shopping list!!
I was very interested in seeing the 3 cylinder radial Anzani aero engine type Y on display on one of the Club stands. Unfortunately i could not find a Club steward to ask questions.
Where did the builder get his drawings and castings from? Are the drawings available? Perhaps the builder made his own castings. Any info would be appreciated.

Regarding your query on the V8 It is an unfinished project by Prof H Chaddock now sadly deceased, It is a 1/12 scale BRM OHC V8 Formula 1 engine of the 60’s era  see here http://www.modelenginenews.org/meng/quorn/dhc.html.

He was also a member of The Society of Model and Experimental Engineers https://www.sm-ee.co.uk/ a group of highly regarded professional engineers who like to build models.

Just to make a correction, Art, the excellent photo selection was not done by me but by Andy "Chipmaster.."  You can have too many chips..!

But I was at the show, and grabbed a few pictures as best I could with my primitive camera.   Hope that these "non engine" shots will interest a few members

A 5" gauge LNWR "Jeanie Deans" on the LNWR soc. stand
A 3 1/2" gauge  LNWR "Jumbo" made by "Curly", LBSC himself.
A 1/7th scale 1930's MG, scratch built.
A very nice chassis for an LNER 2-6-2 V" loco, 5" gauge, on a club stand.

Jo - What does a Bugl engine look like?  Google has not found one.

Hi Colin,

I had to explain to my supplier that Surus had noticed that his casting set did not come home with us  So today he was good enough to personally bring the last but one remaining set of Bugl castings over for Surus's personal casting collection  :noidea:

This is what the castings and the 2.5cc Mk3 BUGL Team racer engine looks like. I won't be building it anytime soon as it is far, far beyond my current machining capabilities  :disappointed: This engine will be serial number 85, the parts for engine number 86 is still with my supplier but best not ask how much he will want for it  :hellno:

Jo

P.S. the one in the photo sold a couple of years ago in Netherlands http://www.ebay.nl/itm/Rare-Paul-Bugl-MK-III-2-5cc-Team-Race-Diesel-Model-Engine-New-/311202953193

When I was working at my place of employment, I very often received from students or researchers, impressive CAD metric drawings toleranced to three or even four - sometimes more -  places of decimals.     Usually they were for making a wooden loudspeaker cabinet, or an angle iron bracket for hanging something from.....  So, three places of metric decimals doesn't absolutely always mean what it says...   ( I just made them to the nearest mm., and never heard a word of complaint...! )
But I don't at all believe that you couldn't make these engine bits, Jo....     Dave

The Bugl 2.5 Team Racer is a very famous international model aircraft racing engine, to get the performance out of it it was built to very exacting standards: Paul Bugl when he built them would have each part ground to dimension, reject parts were very common  ::). Making the engine run is one thing, making it to the original racing standard  :paranoia:

I have just had a quick peek at the drawings. They seem to be marked up MK2 drawings

You can certainly believe that a 2.5CC team race engine needs fits in the microns range to be competitive. Only a few components are critical. Yes, the Bugl is the holy grail of model diesel engine collectors. I'd love to have one, but that's above my addiction spending account. But, prints would suffice if I could get them.

Dave

I encountered similar in my workshop: the submissions coincided with the introduction of electronic calculators... :old:

I suppose it's a question of whether you need to build it to such tight specs, a high performance racing engine would need to be built that way and possibly need  a new piston/liner after each run. However as this will just get run on the bench occasionally (provided you can find a willing finger) you could build it as any other engine. maybe aim to build it to the specs given but if you missed them then the part could still be used rather than scrapped.

That's the difference between building for fun and production.

The Bugl 2.5 is a international class racing engine, so it requires a little better than a production standard ::). It would seem a shame not to at least try to make it to a very high standard. I do have a suitable watch maker's milling machine and Mr Silky is always good for two decimal places (metric) But I sold my tool post grinder before I brought him

I was hoping to get Surus to take the castings with us into work on Monday as one of my work Colleagues (Allen Smithee on MEM) is a retired international pylon racer... but it looks like it will have to wait as Pete is on holiday up north for a while and I know he is enjoying every minute of it  :lolb:
