Let' see your finger treadle engines
« on: September 27, 2017, 12:28:24 AM »
I want to build a couple of finger treadle engines for my two sons.  I've looked over the internet but haven't found more than a couple of basic designs with some slight variations.  I've started my own design but would love to see examples that members of this forum have built or seen that they like.  Here is my design so far...

However, I'm not married to it so let's see what you have...

Hi Chuck, I want to direct you to the following thread, wherein Bogstandard posted a sketch detailing what he considered the essential mechanism geometry for finger engines:

Here's mine from plans in a "Metal Projects" mag

The pdf file is too large to attach so if the design in the video appeals, PM me and I'll send it along.  When you're trying to explain how a steam engine works to a novice the finger treadle is a good example.  It has dead spots at BDC and TDC and it only runs if your timing is on.

Cheers,
Phil

Thanks for posting guys.  These two examples are the prevalent design I've found on the web.

Hi

This one was from drawings in Home Shop Machinist in May/June 2006.  It was the first project my granddaughters built when they were 8 and 10 back in 2007
