Brian, I have thought about the point you make as at the moment I'm just using fairly basic DSLR with an in built flash but it's far from ideal. A bit of secondary lighting is something I'll experiment with.

I bought a tablet computer a few days ago it might be worth seeing how that photographs under different lighting situations.

I dont use the flash on my camera for the build pics, too many highlights as he says. Even the direct lighting from my spotlights I work under can overwhelm the image, usually I aim them off to the side a bit and just use the reflected light.

My lathe and mill are in a fairly confined area where the natural lighting isn't great so I tend to use the flash but I take the point it's far from ideal. I find that a flash on shiny metal often makes what is a good finish look dreadful.

You may have noticed my 'finished result' photos are usually taken outside where the lighting makes my dodgy machining look incredible  ;)
