Buzz Coil Condenser/capacitor
« on: July 20, 2012, 03:28:13 PM »
I have got most of the parts to make a buzz coil - KW point and a suitable coil, just wondering what size condenser/capacitor to use.

There seems to be very little on the net about whats inside the boxes but plenty on how to wire them to the engine, best I could find was this article . The engine has a suitable timer with facility to advance & retard the spark, it will be 6volt and uses a CM-6 10mm plug.

Typically they  were .22uF or 220nF whichever way you prefer.
Have seen .1uF 100nF.

They need to be of a high voltage rating. They live in a nasty environment.

I would suggest 600VDC at least.

Never tried it, but I would think a suppression capacitor with the X1 spec. would be OK.
Suppression caps. are tolerant to voltage spikes. They have to be. Self-healing PP often.

Want a link ??

EDIT Have one anyway, they're cheap enough ... this sort of thing ...

Thanks Dave, I think I can afford one of those, my other thought was a condenser from a small briggs & stratton or similar.

Not with the postage ....  ;D

I see no reason why they should not be the same as the cap. fitted to any 'points/coil' jobby.

Try your local car bits outfit.

No doubt they will be more expensive, but maybe a better deal overall.

I've got some of the things anyway, I think. Will have a severe shufti in my heap.

PM me your addy, and I'll slap a few in a jiffy bag if you want.

Dave
